The log-roll technique with a draw
sheet
(11 Steps)
1. Adjust the bed into an appropriate height for the
caregivers, avoiding the need to overstretch.
2. (Caregiver B) Bend the patient's knee and tell the
patient to cross their arms over their chest if they
are able to.
3. (Caregiver A) Place your hands on the patient's
thigh and shoulder.
4. (Caregiver A) Roll the patient towards you.
5. (Caregiver A) Support the patient laying on the
side using the draw sheet.
6. (Caregiver B) Place the sliding aid under the
patient, between the draw sheet and the transfer
surface. (See Figure 7) With shorter sliding aids,
place the sliding aid under the body part that is
being adjusted.
7. (Caregiver A) Roll the patient back gently onto the
sliding aid into a supine position.
8. (Caregiver B) Roll the patient towards the other
side.
9. (Caregiver B) Support the patient laying on the
side using the draw sheet.
10. (Caregiver A) Unravel the sliding aid from under
the patient to make sure that it is placed under the
whole patient and straighten it out. (See Figure 8)
11. (Caregiver A) Roll the patient back gently into a
supine position.
