5.3 Taking pictures with the studio flash
1. Switch on the studio flash with the main switch (19) position I = On. Set your camera to program mode M for manual settings (for
details see the instruction manual of your camera).
2. Set the correct exposure time according to your camera's instruction manual. We suggest setting the camera to an exposure of
1/125s or 1/60s.
3. For an optimum exposure, we recommend testing various aperture settings (for details see the instruction manual of your
camera) and to vary the flash power. We recommend starting with a medium aperture (e.g. 8) and a low flash power.
The flash power can be adjusted in 6 f-stops in 1/2 intervals. Press the button ▲ (13a) for increasing the flash power and the

button ▼ (13b) for reducing the power.
Please note:
After reducing the flash power, you must give off excess energy left in the flash condenser to avoid an overexposure of the subsequent
picture.
Note
For quick and proper determination of the correct aperture setting, we recommend using a flash exposure meter (optional).

05.4 Modelling light

The modelling light (20) assists you in finding out the correct illumination. It does not influence the final illumination while shooting.
Press the button (15) to turn on the modelling light. When turned on, the LED indicator (15a) lights up red. and the power level indicator
(10) flashes for about 5 seconds. During this time, you have the possibility to adjust power of the modelling light with buttons ▲ (18a
increase power) or ▼ (18b = decrease power) in 8 steps.
To save energy and to avoid overheating, please switch off the modelling light after your test shootings with button (15) – the LED
(15a) turns off.
CAUTION
The modelling light is not suited as a permanent light and must not be used for more than 10 minutes in order to avoid risk of
melting of attached accessories like conical snoots, softboxes, honeycombs etc.
05.5 Photocell (Slave cell)
The Semi DFX studio flash is equipped with a photocell (01) This cell reacts to any kind of light source and triggers the DFX studio
flash simultaneously. This enables you to trigger more studio flashes simultaneously.
If you are working with on-camera flash, please mind turning the flash to manual performance level, this ensures that pre-flashes of
the on-camera flash are turned off. Flash source and photocell should be in direct line of sight. With On/Off button (11) the photocell
is either activated or deactivated. The LED photocell (11a) lights up in red and shows an activated photocell.
