MAINTENANCE
Never service or repair the mower until the blade and engine have
stopped and you have disconnected the high tension wire from the
spark plug.
Crankcase oil change
1. Place the mower on a flat surface.
2. Start the engine and let it run for about a minute so that oil flows
better. Turn off engine.
3. Disconnect the high tension wire from the spark plug.
4. Remove the grassbag.
5. Drain the fuel tank in order to avoid possible spillage and accidents.
6. Tip mower on its right side and unscrew the drainage plug under
the engine. Empty the crankcase, allowing the oil to flow into a suita-
ble tray.
7. When the crankcase is completely empty, screw the drainage pulg
back on again and fill the crankcase with clean SAE 30 oil (0,65 l).
NOTE: Please refer to local regulations for correct disposal of burnt
engine oil.
Drainage of the fuel tank
1. Stop the engine and disconnect the high tension wire from spark plug.
2. Unscrew the fuel tank cap.
3. Using a siphon, pump the petrol from the tank into a suitable con-
tainer.
Servicing the air filter
Clean the air filter every 25 hours. Replace it every season. (See engi-
ne manual for further information).
Blade Inspection
The frequency of blade inspection depends on the working conditions.
1. Make sure that the engine is not running and the high wire is
disconnected from the spark plug.
2. Drain petrol from the fuel tank.
3. Tip mower on its right side. Avoid rotating the blade when the
mower is tipped because starting problems may result.
4. Carefully examine the blade:
a) If the cutting edge has become rounded it must be sharpened.
b) Check where the flat and curved parts meet and, if there are any
cracks or signs of wear replace the blade immediately.
ATTENTION: A worn or cracked blade can easily break during use
or pieces may break off, resulting in serious injury to yourself or a
bystander.
Sharpening or replacing the cutter blade
1. Turn the engine off and disconnect the high tension wire from the
spark plug.
2. Drain fuel from the fuel tank.
3. Tip mower on its right side. Avoid rotating the blade when the
mower is tipped up because starting problems may result.
4. Hold the blade firmly with a gloved hand and, using a spanner,
unscrew the bolt and washer.
5. Remove the blade in order to sharpen or replace it.
6. Using a flat file, sharpen the top side of blade, maintaining the ori-
ginal cutting angle. The blade will remain balanced if the same
amount of material is removed from both cutting edges.
7. Check the balance of the blade by using a blade balancer. An
unbalanced blade will lean on its heavier side. If the blade is not
balanced fi!e more metal off the cutting edge of the heavy side and
check the balance again.
8. Install a sharp, balanced blade, following the above procedure in
reverse sequence (see points 4 and 5).
9. Tighten the blade bolt to 5,5 Kgm.
NOTE: A blade balancer may be purchased at any good hardware
shop.
In order to obtain best possible cutting results, we recommend that
you replace the blade annually in addition to sharpening it whene-
ver necessary.
Cleaning the mower deck
To achieve optimum cutting results and effective collection, the undersi-
de of the mower deck and the grass discharge area must be kept clean.
These models feature a special device that allows you to clean the
machine simply and quickly using a normal garden hose.
1. Fit your female quick-release connector onto the male connector on
the mower body, after making sure the connector is free from any
grass residue.
NOTE: Make sure that the hose is not trapped under the body.
2. Turn the water ON.
3. Switch ON your mower following the instructions described in the
corresponding section.
4. Keep the safety lever pressed and do not touch the traction handle.
5. Allow the machine to work "in neutral" for several minutes. Grass
residues will be detached due to the combined action of the water jet
and blade movement, leaving the internal parts of the body perfectly
clean.
6. After cleaning, switch OFF the engine, detach the water hose and
allow your perfectly clean lawn mower to dry.
De-energizing the starting system (IB-55050B)
Prior to cleaning under the mower, performing maintenance or trans-
porting the mower, you must de-energize the Touch-N-Mow starting
system. To de-energize the system:
1. Disconnect the spark plug wire.
2. Actuate the starting system.
3. Turn the safety key 1/4 turn counterclockwise to the lock position.
4. Remove the safety key.
If the safety key doesn't lock, slightly pull the rewind cord to release
tension in the starting system.
Troubleshooting tips (IB-55050B)
If the engine fails to start:
1. Check the fuel level.
2. Make sure the spark plug is connected properly.
3. Re-energize the starting system by following the steps outlined in
"Energizing the Touch-N-Mow".
4. Remember to push the starter control before pulling the System 2 lever.
5. Make sure the safety key is in the RUN position.
6. Verify the System 2 lever is pulling the starter the correct distance
to activate and re-energize the Touch-N-Mow.
7. Make sure the stop switch wire is correctly fastened and grounded.
Preparing mower for storage (more than a month)
1. Drain fuel from the tank.
2. Start engine and let it run until it stops, due to lack of fuel.
ATTENTION: All petrol must be expended to prevent gum-like var-
nish deposits from forming in the carburetor, fuel line and fuel tank.
Such deposits, if allowed to form, will cause starting problems and
poor engine performance.
3. Remove the high tension wire from the spark plug and clean the
surrounding area so that dirt cannot penetrate the cylinder when the
spark plug is removed. Remove the spark plug and pour a spoonful
of 2-cycle oil into the cylinder chamber. Pull the recoil starter handle
slowly to distribute oil on the inside of the cylinder. Then install the
spark plug and tighten, using a spanner. Do not install the high ten-
sion wire on the spark plug.
