Installation & Maintenance Information
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE
APPLICATION
EDS/EDSX Control Stations and DSD/DSDX Cover Assemblies are pre-built with
operators that are used as a remote means of:
Motor control
Visual indication of equipment performance
On-Off control of control circuits
Circuit selection
Control Stations are suitable for use indoors or outdoors in hazardous areas
where flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust is present or likely to be
present. See Hazardous and Environmental Rating table for detailed information.
INSTALLATION
!
WARNING
To prevent explosions and shock hazard, electrical power must be OFF
before and during installation and maintenance.
1. Select a mounting location that will provide suitable strength and rigidity to
support all control devices and contained wiring. Figure 1 shows mounting
dimensions for all EDS and EFS Back Boxes. Drill and tap mounting holes
as required.
CAUTION
!
To avoid the risk of explosion, hammers or prying tools must not be
allowed to damage the flat ground joint surfaces. Do not handle covers
roughly or place them on surfaces that might damage or scratch the flat
ground joint surfaces.
2. Securely fasten the back box to the mounting surface then connect conduit
as required.
NOTICE: To ensure proper installation, hazardous location information is
marked on the nameplate of each control device. Conduit sealing fittings may be
required in order to comply with the NEC, plus any other applicable standards.
Review nameplate(s) for specific installation information.
3. Pull supply wires into the back box, making them long enough for the
required connections. Make sure to leave additional wire length for opening
the cover and servicing as required.
4. Make the electrical connections as required for the given wiring system.
See operator contact and wiring diagrams for further details.

EDS/EDSX/EFS (dead end) and EDSC/EDSCX/EFSC (through feed) Series Factory
Sealed Push Button, Selector Switch, and Pilot Light Control Stations are used
separately or in combination with a variety of standard features and special
options available.
Crouse-Hinds Control Stations and Devices are ideal for installing in petroleum
refineries, chemical, petrochemical, and other industrial process facilities; grain
processing and storage facilities and other heavy industrial applications where
Class I, Class II, or Class III hazards are present.
!
WARNING
To avoid the risk of explosion, check for dirt, grit or other foreign
material on the machined flanges of the cover and the back box. Verify
that each surface is clean and free of any damage or corrosion before
assembling. Surfaces must seat fully and properly against each other
to provide a proper explosion-proof and dust-ignition proof joint. When
applicable, ensure that gaskets and o-rings are clean, free of any damage
and properly mate with a clean surface, free of damage or corrosion.
5. Verify wiring with continuity checks. Also, verify there are no unintentional
ground connections with a resistance tester. Check operators to ensure
proper mechanical operation as well as proper electrical function.
!
WARNING
To avoid the risk of explosion, all unused conduit openings must be
plugged and plugs must be a minimum of 1/8" thick. Plug threads to have
minimum of five threads of engagement except for Group B applications
where straight threads require minimum of seven threads of engagement.
No conduit openings are to be added in the field.
6. Assemble cover assembly to the back box with cover screws. Torque cover
screws to 60 in-lbs.
7. Install EYS/EYD series sealing fittings along with Chico Sealing Compound
in accordance with the instructions provided with the fitting and sealing
compound, as required per Hazardous and Environmental Ratings Table.
!
WARNING
To avoid the risk of explosion, use only Crouse-Hinds factory-sealed
DEVX series devices and ESWP126 contact blocks with DS, DSX and DSDX
series covers and EDS/EFS series back boxes. No additional components or
devices are allowed to be installed in the enclosure or cover assembly.

MAINTENANCE
To prevent explosion and shock hazard, always disconnect power
before opening the enclosure for inspection or service.
1. Perform visual, electrical and mechanical inspections on a regular basis.
The environment and frequency of use should determine the frequency of
inspection. However, it is recommended that checks be made at least once
a year. We recommend an Electrical Preventive Maintenance Program as
described in the National Fire Protection Association Bulletin NFPA No.
Figure 3
70B: Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance (www.
nfpa.org).
2. Make sure cover screws are tight. Inspect all gaskets for damage. Ensure
gaskets are fully seated in gasket grooves or in operator undercuts.
3. Clean cover and back box machined flange surfaces. Inspect machined
flanges for any damage or corrosion.
4. Visually check for any undue heating evidenced by discoloration of wires or
other components, damaged or worn parts or leakage evidenced by water or
corrosion in the interior, as applicable.
5. Electrically check that all connections are clean, tight and contacts make or
break, as required.
6. Mechanically check that all parts are properly assembled and that operating
Figure 4
mechanisms move freely and operate as intended.
To prevent shock hazard, DEVX operators used with EFS back boxes,
must only use Covers marked internally with "0209875-1" (iron cover) or
"0209875-2" (aluminum cover).
