EDS, EFS, EDSC and EFSC Series Single and Two Gang Device Bodies
Installation & Maintenance Information
APPLICATION
Eaton's Crouse-Hinds Division Electrical Construction Materials EDS and EDSC Series Single and Two
Gang Device Bodies are intended for use with Crouse-Hinds series DS and DSD Control Station Covers,
and Crouse-Hinds series CPS, ENR and GFS Receptacle and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter Covers.
When properly assembled, the complete assemblies are suitable for use in Class I and Class II hazardous
(classified) locations as defined by the National Electrical Code
(CEC). Refer to specific application information published in Crouse-Hinds series catalog or to information
INSTALLATION
Electrical power must be turned OFF before and during installation and maintenance.
1.
Select a mounting location that will provide suitable strength and rigidity for supporting all
contained wiring and control devices. Figure 1 shows mounting dimensions for EDS, EDSC, EFS
and EFSC Device Bodies. Drill mounting holes for 5/16 inch diameter mounting hardware.
2.
Securely fasten body to the mounting surface, then attach into conduit system. Install approved
conduit sealing fittings when required. Read CAUTION statement below.
Conduit sealing fittings may be required to be installed to comply with the requirements of
the CEC or NEC, Section 501-5 and/or 502-5, plus any other applicable standards. Refer to
information published in Crouse-Hinds series catalog or to information in the Installation and
Maintenance Information Sheet for each cover to be installed on the EDS, EFS and EDSC
Bodies to determine the need for sealing fittings.
All unused conduit openings must be plugged with Crouse-Hinds series PLG plugs that are
approved for hazardous areas. Plugs must engage a minimum of five (5) full threads and be a
minimum of 1/8 inch thick.
3.
Select the proper cover for assembly. Similar cover and back box materials can only be used (e.g.
iron with iron; aluminum with aluminum). Refer to the Installation and Maintenance Information
Sheet provided with each cover to complete the installation.
MAINTENANCE
Always disconnect primary power source before opening enclosure for inspection or service.
Hammers or prying tools must not be used; they may damage the flat ground joint surfaces. Do not
handle covers roughly, or place them on surfaces that might damage or scratch the flat ground joint
surfaces. Keep mating surfaces clean of dirt, grit or other foreign materials.
1.
Regular inspection should be made. A schedule for maintenance should be determined by the
environment and frequency of use. It is recommended that it should be at least once a year.
2.
Perform visual, electrical and mechanical checks on all components on a regular basis.
Visually check for undue heating evidenced by discoloration of wires or other components,
damaged or worn parts or corrosion in the interior.
Electrically check to make sure that all connections within the enclosure are clean and tight, and
that contacts in the components make or break as required.
Mechanically check that all parts are properly assembled, and operating mechanisms move freely.
Check to see that the ground joint surfaces of the body and cover are free of scratches, mars, grit
or other imperfections that might impair mating of the two components and the explosionproof
and dust-ignitionproof integrity of the product in operation.
Check all cover screws to make sure that they have been tightened with a screwdriver and cannot
be removed by hand.
3.
We recommend an Electrical Preventive Maintenance program as described in the National Fire
Protection Association Bulletin NFPA No. 70B.
