When necessary, this special type of chain saw may be used with a
single hand by a trained operator who is using a correct and safe working
method to prune trees and remove branches; all other operation, on the
other hand, must be carried out 2 hands, as required with a traditional
chain saw (fig.31-A).

Working with tree service chain-saw from rope and harness
Caution: This section presents suitable working practices for reducing the
risk of injury from the use of tree service chain-saw when working at height
from a rope and harness. While it may form the basis of guidance and
training literature, it should not be regarded as a substitute for formal
training.
Presented are:
- General recommendations that should be followed before using a tree
service chain –saw for work at height from a rope and harness.
- Preparations for using a tree service chain-saw from a rope and
harness, and
- How to use a tree service chain-saw for pruning and dismantling,
including secure working positioning for two-handed use, starting the
chain-saw, cutting with the chain-saw, restrictions on one-handed use
and freeing a trapped saw.
This section does not deal with techniques for controlling sections of
branches and stems cut by the saw. Nor does it cover those aspects of safe
use already dealt with in "general safety warnings".
General recommendations
The operator of a tree service chain-saw working at height from a rope and
harness should never work alone. A ground worker trained in appropriate
emergency procedures should be present to assist.
