4.7 - Safety distances

Protective measures to guard against crushing and collision during
opening travel are considered to have been complied with at the
danger points if at least one of the following conditions is met, bea-
a) the leaf travels parallel to a flat surface at a distance X ≤ 100 mm
from it and there is a safety distance Y ≥ 200 between the seconda-
ry edge and the parts facing the room (see diagram).
For telescopic doors, the measurement is made with reference to
the leaf nearest to the room
b) the leaf travels parallel to a flat surface at a distance of
100 < X ≤150 mm from it (see diagram), and the force of
the leaves is within the permitted values
c) the secondary contact edge is covered by guards (such as
covers, casings or fixed panels) at a distance of ≤ 8 mm or ≥ 25 mm
from the door leaves, designed in such a way that:
- people are unable to reach any danger point up to a height of 2.5
m above the floor;
- they can only be removed or opened with the aid of a tool;
- they do not create additional risks (e.g. shearing or entrainment)
d) the secondary contact edge is covered by barriers at a distance
of ≤ 8 mm or ≥ 25 mm from the moving leaves of the door.
The barriers are installed to direct pedestrian traffic or prevent pe-
destrians from accessing unsafe areas. They must be:
- designed in such a way that children cannot climb over or slide
underneath them
- appropriately installed
- capable of withstanding the forces that occur during normal ope-
ration
- at least 900 mm tall
The barriers must not generate new hazards.
e) protective measures against shearing or entrainment hazards
are considered to be complied with at the danger points during the
door opening cycle if the safety distances shown in the diagrams
are provided
28
ring in mind that when most users are elderly, infirm,
disabled and children, contact between the door and the user
is unacceptable:
crushing protection
distance from leaf surface
Protective panel
shearing and entrainment hazard
finger protection (entrainment)
