2. Install the Waterproof Membrane
CAUTION: Risk of property damage. Failure to incorporate a waterproof membrane in this
installation can result in water damage to the support wall and floor.
Installation techniques for installing waterproof membranes vary. Install the waterproof membrane
following standard industry practices.
It is critical that a waterproof membrane overlaps the shower pan or receptor flange, and extends at
least 8" (20.3 cm) above the knee wall.
It may be necessary to fold the waterproof membrane to maintain a continuous waterproof barrier
behind the hand rail.
If any cutting is required, carefully seal any holes by using adhesives, solvents, or patches
recommended by the waterproof membrane manufacturer.
3. Cut the Rails
CAUTION: Risk of personal injury. Always wear protective equipment, including safety glasses
and hearing protection, when cutting materials.
Measure the distance (D) of the installation pocket for the hand rail.
Subtract 3/16" (5 mm) from the measured distance to account for the thickness of the end caps.
Carefully mark the distance on the grip rail and wall rail.
Confirm the measurement and marks are correct.
NOTE: Use a power miter saw when cutting the rails. Firmly secure the rails before cutting to ensure an
accurate cut.
Cut the wall rail and grab rail. Cut each of them separately.
The wall rail and grip rail must be cut to the exact same length. If they are not cut to the same
length, trim the longer rail to match the shorter rail.
NOTE: If the rails are cut short, small gaps may be covered by tile and cement board.
Remove any burrs and round any sharp edges with a file.
