Thank you for placing your trust in our company by purcha-
sing the Weller WMD 3 Control Unit. Production was based
on stringent quality requirements which guarantee the per-
fect operation of the device.

1. Caution!

Please read these Operating Instructions and the attached
safety information carefully prior to initial operation. Failure
to observe the safety regulations results in a risk to life and
limb.
The manufacturer shall not be liable for damage resulting
from misuse of the machine or unauthorised alterations.
The Weller WMD 3 control unit corresponds to the EC
Declaration of Conformity in accordance with the basic safe-
ty requirements of Directives 89/336/EEC and 73/23EEC.

2. Description

The WELLER WMD 3 control unit is suitable for simultaneous
operation of 3 soldering tools. For this purpose, 3 channels
are available. No special setting operations are required,
because the microprocessor automatically detects the con-
nected tool and activates the corresponding control parame-
ters.
Temperature is controlled digitally, and the desired process
parameters can be entered by means of four keys. A further
key switch enables the input functions to be locked. Entered
parameters are retained even after the unit is switched off.
Various time functions, such as temperature reduction to
150˚C on the soldering/de-soldering bit, or time limitation for
the de-ionised hot air flow, can be set straightforwardly.
Units are equipped with an integral high-performance pump.
This is started by a microswitch which is incorporated in the
handle, or an optional footswitch. The supply unit is equip-
ped with a pointer pressure gauge for the purpose of vacu-
um display. This also indicates the degree of dirtying of the
filter cartridge.
The metal casing is treated with anti-static paint, and fulfils
the EGB safety requirements. Equipotential bonding, if des-
ired, can be achieved by means of a pawl socket on the uni-
t's backplane. The station is grounded as a part of standard
equipment.

3. Commissioning

All soldering tools must be stored in the specially designed
safety tray. Connect the corresponding connecting wires to
the control unit:
- Air hose of hot gas pencil to `Air' nipple [8]
- Vacuum hose of de-soldering bit to `Vac' nipple [9]
- Insert the electrical connection wires of the soldering tools
into 7-pin connecting sockets [5] and lock.
Warning: To avoid injury, the vacuum hose of the de-sol-
dering bit should never be connected to the 'Air Nipple'.
Check whether the mains voltage is consistent with the infor-
mation on the type label. If the control unit's mains voltage is
correct, connect it to the mains. Switch the unit on by means
of the mains switch [1]. When the unit is switched on, the
microprocessor performs a self-test during which all seg-
ments are briefly in operation. Next, the electronic display
automatically switches to the standard temperature setting
of 350˚C for all channels and 50% for the `Air' setting. For
channels which are being used, the green LED lights up.
Continuous LED light-up indicates that the system is heating
up. When the LED flashes on and off, this indicates that the
pre-selected temperature has been attained.
Channel selection
The digital display can be set to the desired channels (1, 2 or
3) by operation of the `1-2-3' key and to the `AIR' function.
The displayed channel is marked by a red LED above the
connector.
Switching channels on or off
In the standard position, all channels are switched on and set
to 350˚C. The `Air' function is set to 50%.
If a channel is not required, it can be switched off by simul-
taneously pressing the `UP' and `DOWN' keys. An `OFF' sign
appears upon selection of the channel switched off. To acti-
vate a channel, the `1-2-3' key is used to select the desired
channel, followed by pressing the `UP' and `DOWN' keys
