8. SAFETY DEVICE

8.1) BLOCSTOP
TM
BS fall arrest device
The fall arrest system functions automatically when:
- a lowering operation is initiated: the operator must lift the
load using the hoist; the fall arrest device releases its grip on
the wire rope automatically,
- a lifting or pulling hoist failure occurs: an emergency
operation must be organised to evacuate any personnel on
the suspended platform or recover the materials load.
8.2) BLOCSTOP
TM
BSA fall arrest device
GB
The fall arrest function works automatically: a lifting system
failure is detected by the lever (item 2, fig. 2) equipped with the
detection roller (item 4, fig. 2) which continuously rolls against
the lifting wire rope (item 6, fig. 2).

IMPORTANT: If a fall has been stopped, the lifting system must be inspected by a technician.
When the lever tilts downward (fig. 6), the fall arrest device
locks on the fall arrest wire rope and stops the fall of the
suspended platform.
As specified in §2, four causes (a, b, c, d) of failure or incident
will cause the fall arrest device to lock on the fall arrest wire
rope.
For causes:
- a and b: Rupture of lifting wire rope or hoist failure. An
emergency operation must be organised to evacuate the
personnel on the suspended platform.
- c: Loss of tension on lifting wire rope. The operator must re-
tension the concerned lifting wire rope by acting on the hoist
in the lifting direction, and clearing the suspended platform
from the obstacle. The fall arrest device unlocks
automatically on the fall arrest wire rope once the lifting wire
rope is tensioned.
- d: Inclination > 14°. The operator must put the suspended
platform horizontal by actuating the hoist on the lower side in
the up direction. The fall arrest device automatically releases
its grip on the fall arrest wire rope.
Checks
in charge
®
or
Functional check, cleaning, lubrication.
As instructed in §5.2.2 of this manual and
recommendations in lifting system manual.
Check inclination stop: by inclining the suspended
platform until the fall arrest device of the lower hoist
locks. Recover the load on this hoist. Repeat the check
procedure for the other device. This check must be
performed with the suspended platform no more than
0.5 m off the ground.
Check locking of fall arrest wire rope: by placing
suspended platform on ground and checking that the
jaws in the fall arrest device lock.
- check for absence of deformation on fall arrest device
connecting stirrup,
- check tightening of fall arrest device mounting nuts.
Check locking on fall arrest wire rope: by performing
lowering manoeuvre with hoist, fall arrest device should
hold the load.
Check load lowering function: by performing a hoist
lowering manoeuvre while keeping the unlock stirrup in
the raised position. The fall arrest wire rope should slide
freely in the fall arrest device. This check should be
performed at a height of no more than 0.5 m.
Check for presence of cotter pin.

5. INSTALLATION

5.1 BLOCSTOP
TM
BS
As specified in §2, the BS fall arrest device can be used on
material's lifting and pulling installations, or on man lifting
suspended platforms. These two types of installations are
respectively detailed in §5.1.3 and §5.1.4.
5.1.1 Installation of fall arrest devices
IMPORTANT: The fall arrest device mounting system
must provide a tensile strength of at least four times the
nominal capacity of the BLOCSTOP
TM
BS fall arrest device.
This is indispensable to ensure the mechanical strength of the
installation in the event of a fall.
Before you proceed to install the fall arrest device, check that
the device is in good visible condition and, in particular, that:
- there are no signs of impact or deformation on the fall arrest
device,
- the stirrup (item d, fig. 1) swivels freely on its swivel pin,
- the marking on the device is legible and complies with the
information in the « Markings » section for the unit,
- the holes (items a and f, fig. 1) are neither soiled or
obstructed.
NOTE: The fall arrest device is supplied with a
shackle (item e, fig. 1) optionally. Any other shackle having the
following characteristics can be used:
- BS 15 and BS20: shackle (min. opening A = 38 mm, fig. 26,
with Ø12 pin and cotter pin (item h, fig. 1) with working load
limit of 1.6 t.
- BS35: shackle (min. opening A = 55 mm, fig. 33, equipped
with Ø22 pin and a cotter pin (item h, fig. 1) with working load
limit of 3.2 t.
5.1.2 Preparation of wire ropes
See §5.2.2.
5.1.3 Assembly and installation of lifting wire rope
in fall arrest device for a load lifting or pulling
installation (fig. 21)
NOTE: The fall arrest device can be adapted to any
lifting or pulling device implementing a feed-through wire rope
(TIRFOR
®
manual hoist or TIRAK
TM
electric hoist) equipped
with a TIRFOR
®
or TIRAK
TM
wire rope.
Fig.21 illustrates installation of the fall arrest device with a
TIRFOR
®
hoist implementing a feed-through wire rope; the
installation procedure is as follows:
- secure the fall arrest device (item 3, fig. 21) by its shackle
(item 6, fig. 21) to the anchor point (item 8, fig. 21) using a
sling (item 1, fig. 21).
IMPORTANT: make sure that the fall arrest device is
always properly aligned with the lifting or pulling wire rope and
that the slack in the sling does not exceed 5 cm to prevent any
excessive jolting if a lifting or pulling system failure occurs.
- secure the TIRFOR
®
(item 2, fig. 21) to an anchor point
(item 10, fig. 21),
- release the TIRFOR
®
to allow insertion of the wire rope (see
TIRFOR
®
manual),
- insert the lifting wire rope (item 4, fig. 21) through the hole
(item a, fig. 1) of the fall arrest device and have the wire rope
come out through the exit hole (item f, fig. 1),
- run the lifting wire rope through a spacer tube (item 9,
fig. 21). This piece is placed between the TIRFOR
®
fall arrest device to serve as a stop for the fall arrest device
when the cable moves in the device in the pulling direction
(item c, fig. 1),
- run the wire rope through the TIRFOR
®
and engage the
TIRFOR
®
(see TIRFOR
®
manual).
IMPORTANT: The length of the spacer (item 9, fig. 1)
must be sufficient to not interfere with movement of the unlock
stirrup of the fall arrest device (item d, fig. 1).
5.1.4 Assembly and installation of wire ropes in fall
arrest device used on suspended platform
(fig. 22)
- place the suspended platform directly in line with the
suspension points,
- secure the lifting (item 2, fig. 22) and fall arrest (item 1,
fig. 22) wire ropes. The fall arrest wire rope must be
suspended free next to the lifting wire rope,
- insert the fall arrest wire rope (item 1, fig. 22) in the entry
hole of the fall arrest device (item a, fig.1) and have it come
out through the exit hole (item f, fig. 1),
- run the fall arrest wire rope through a spacer tube (item 5,
fig. 22). This spacer is rigidly secured to the suspended
platform and serves as a stop for the fall arrest device when
the wire rope moves in the unit in the pulling direction (item c,
fig. 1),
- secure the fall arrest device (item 4, fig. 22) by its shackle
(item 8, fig. 22) to the anchor point (item 9, fig. 22) of the
suspended platform using a sling (item 6, fig. 22),
- insert the lifting wire rope in the hoist (item 3, fig. 22) (refer
to the manual for the hoist installed on the suspended
platform).
IMPORTANT: The spacer tube must not interfere with
movement of the unlock stirrup on the fall arrest device (item
5, fig. 22) (item d, fig. 1).
IMPORTANT: Make sure that the fall arrest device is
always properly aligned with the fall arrest wire rope and that
the slack in the sling does not exceed 5 cm to prevent any
excessive jolting if a lifting system failure occurs.
- Pull on the free end of the fall arrest wire rope until it is
tensioned.
IMPORTANT: The wire rope coming out of the device
must be free to move.
- Ballast the fall arrest wire rope (see §5.2.3).
