Why Day & Night?
The Beurer TL 55 "Day & Night" daylight therapy lamp has a brightlight to start the day full of energy, and a red
light which dims in order to help you fall asleep and sleep through more easily in the evening. This double func-
tion means that the device actively supports your natural biorhythm and ensures the gentle regulation between
day and night.
Why use a daylight therapy lamp?
When the hours of daylight are noticeably decreased in autumn and people increasingly stay inside, the effects
of a lack of light may cumulate. This is often described as "winter depression". The symptoms can present them-
selves in a number of ways:
Imbalance
Subdued mood
Lack of energy and listlessness
Generally feeling under the weather
The cause of these symptoms is the fact that light, particularly sunlight, is essential for life and has a direct effect
upon the human body. Sunlight indirectly controls the production of melatonin, which is only passed to the blood
in darkness. This hormone shows your body that it's time to sleep. Therefore in months with less sunshine more
melatonin is produced, meaning that it is harder to get up. Your body's functions have powered down. Melatonin
production can be stopped if the daylight therapy lamp is used as soon as you wake up in the morning, so as
early as possible; as a result, there can be a positive uplift in your mood.
Lack of light also prevents the production of the happy hormone serotonin, which is said to significantly influence
our well-being. The application of light yields qualitative changes to hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain
that have an effect on our activity levels, our feelings and our well-being. To compensate for such a hormonal
imbalance, the daylight therapy lamp can create a suitable replacement for natural sunlight.
In the medical field, daylight therapy lamps are used for compensation of the effects of a lack of light. Daylight
therapy lamps simulate daylight over 10,000 lux. The light can influence the human body and be used as a
treatment or as a preventative measure. Normal electric light, however, is not sufficient to influence hormonal
balance. Because in a well-lit office the illuminance level amounts to just 500 lux.
Why does red light help you sleep?
A restorative night's sleep is of huge importance for our physical and psychological well-being; after all, it is
during sleep that we process things such as new experiences and improve our mental and physical fitness. In
line with this, healthy, restorative sleep is particularly important; many people have problems getting to sleep or
sleeping through, however.
