4. The measuring principle

This scale operates according to the B.I.A. principle (bioelectric impedance analysis). This enables the measure-
ment of physical relationships within seconds by means of an unnoticeable and harmless signal from the con-
ductors in the scale. The body fat percentage and other physical relationships in the body can be determined
by measuring the electrical resistance (impedance) and calculating constants and individual parameters such
as age, height, gender, weight and degree of physical activity.
Muscle tissue and water have good electrical conductivity, and therefore lower resistance. Fatty tissue, on the
other hand, has low conductivity as fat cells hold a lower water content than muscles.

5. Batteries

WARNING:
• Swallowing batteries and/or battery fluid can be extremely dangerous. Keep the battery and scale
out of the reach of children. Should a child, or any other person swallow a battery and/or battery
fluid, please call 911 immediately.
• Should battery fluid leak and come into contact with your eyes or skin, immediately rinse with plenty
of clean water. Please call 911 immediately.
• Batteries should not be charged or reactivated by any other means.
• Batteries should not be taken apart, thrown in the fire or short circuited.
CAUTION:
• If a battery has leaked do not touch the battery fluid. Avoid skin contact (e.g. put on protective gloves)
and clean the battery compartment with a dry cloth.
NOTICE:
• Always use the size and type of batteries indicated.
• Never use rechargeable batteries. This may damage the unit.
• Replace weak battery before it discharges completely. When "Lo" appears in the display please
change the battery.
• Leaking batteries may damage the device. If you do not intend to use the scale for longer periods,
remove the battery from the battery compartment before placing the device in storage.
• To avoid draining the batteries do not place any items on the scale (Please make sure that there is
no weight on the feet of the scale) when not in use.
• Batteries can contain toxins that are harmful to health and the environment. Always dispose of
batteries in accordance with applicable local regulations. Do not dispose of batteries with normal
household waste.
If present, remove the battery insulating strip or remove the battery's protective film and insert the battery
according to the polarity. If the scale fails to operate, remove the battery completely and insert it again. Re-
place the battery cover carefully. Your scale is equipped with a "replace battery" indicator. When the scale is
operated with a battery that is too weak, "Lo" appears in the display field and the scale automatically switches
off. In this case the battery must be replaced (4 x1.5 V batteries AAA).
New batteries will last for approximately two years if the unit is used three times per day. Trial batteries supplied
with the unit may have a shorter life. Remove the batteries if you do not intend to use the unit for a period of
three months or longer before placing the device in storage.

6. Operation

WARNING!
• Never use, or allow others to use, this unit in combination with the following medical electronic
devices,
(1) Medical electronic implants such as pacemakers,
(2) Electronic life support systems such as an artificial heart/lung,
(3) Portable electronic medical devices such as an electrocardiograph.
This scale passes a harmless and unnoticeable small electrical current through your body when taking a
measurement. This weak electrical current is not felt while using the scale.
