5.0 INSTALLATION
IMPORTANT: It is mandatory that the operator has
a full understanding of all instructions,
safety regulations, cautions and
warnings, before starting to operate any
of this high force tool equipment. In case of doubt,
contact Enerpac.
5.1 Mounting PL R-series pumps
Use four M10 screws or bolts (not supplied).
Dimensions for setting up PL F-series pumps
In figure 3 and in the accompanying table you will
find the most important measurements that you
must take into account when setting up the pumps.
5.2 Connecting the pump
1. Screw the hose or the connector into the pump
opening.
2. As a precautionary measure and to make it
easier to monitor the pressure, place a
manometer on the hydraulic outlet of the pump.
3. Connect the hose(s) to the hydraulic cylinder or
to the tool to be used.
Remarks: pumps of the PL F-series type are
supplied with an O-ring that is mounted onto the
reservoir to ensure a good leak-tightness at the link
point.
5.3 Venting the pump
PL R-series pump: vented.
PL F-series pump: venting on the reservoir.
Vented pumps deliver better performances.
5.4 Position of the pump
PL R-series pump
horizontal: 'point' the fastenings downwards.
vertical: point the reservoir downwards.
PL F-series pump: venting on the reservoir.
6.0 OPERATION
6.1 Before using the pump
1. Check that all the couplings and connections in
the circuit have been fastened properly and are
leak-tight.
2. Check the oil level in the reservoir before starting
up the pump. See also § 7.1 and 7.4.
CAUTION: Never attach an extension to
the pump handle. This can adversely
affect the operation of the pump.
WARNING: The handle of the pump can
kick back sharply. For that reason you
should always stand at the side of the
pump, out of range of the handle.
Remark: to reduce the amount of force that you
need to apply to the handle you can pump with
smaller strokes. The handle's greatest effect lies in
the last 5 degrees of the handle stroke.
Single-acting application with release valve
1. Turn the release valve to the right to close it.
CAUTION: ONLY HAND-TIGHTEN the
release valve. Using tools for this job can
damage the pump and adversely affect
its operation.
2. The handle can be used to boost the pressure in
the hydraulic circuit. This pressure level is
maintained until the release valve is opened.
3. Open the release valve (by turning it to the left)
to relieve the system pressure and to allow the
oil to flow back to the reservoir.
6.2 Pressure limiting
Maximum pressure: these pumps are not equipped
with a maximum pressure safety valve. Pressure
must be limited either by an external safety valve
(not included) or by the maximum effort the operator
applies on the pump handle (40 kg./88 lbs).
6.3 Venting
When the circuit has been vented the cylinder
plunger will move smoothly.
6.4 Pump with a single-acting cylinder:
1. Vent the reservoir of the pump (only in the case
of vented pumps) and close the release valve.
2. Place the pump higher than the cylinder.
3. Place the cylinder so that the side where the
plunger is located is facing downwards (or
upwards in the case of a pull cylinder).
4. Start pumping until the cylinder has completed
its outstroke (or instroke in the case of a pull
cylinder).
5. Open the release valve to allow the cylinder to
complete its instroke (or outstroke in the case of
a pull cylinder). This forces the air which is under
pressure towards the pump reservoir.
6. Repeat these actions if necessary.
7. If necessary, add more oil; see § 7.1 on refilling
the oil.
8. Put the pressure relief cap into the operating
position.
