OPERATING THE APPLIANCE

Button(s)
Description
The preamplifier is switched on and off using this button at the front panel.
It has no standby option. When switched off the device is internally sepa-
POWER (1)
rated from the AC power. After switching on, the device needs up to four
seconds before it is operational. As a precaution, after switching on, the
volume setting of the preamplifier should be reduced.
A short touch on the button for the desired input channel
("LINE1"..."LINE5" or "BALANCED") changes to the playback of the
Input keys
audio source connected there. The front panel as well as the remote con-
(5)(14)
trol carry those buttons. The name of the currently selected input channel
appears in the display (4). Before switching over the input channel, the
volume (6)(16) should be turned down as a precaution!
Hold down the button "VOLUME

mote control as well as at the amplifier front panel. The display (4) shows the
currently selected Volume value. The minimum value is -99dB, the maximum
LEVEL
Volume appears at latest with 00dB, for most speakers much below this value.
/
(16)
The volume setting does not influence the signal at the "REC OUTPUT" (8).
The MUTE function can be activated or deactivated at the front panel as
well as with the remote control. It switches off the preamplifier output "OUT-
MUTE
PUT" (9) and the recording output "REC OUTPUT" (8). Pressing one of
(2)(12)
these buttons again restores the volume to its original setting. For the time
the preamplifier is muted the display (4) reads "MUTING".
One channel of the system (right or left) and thus one of the loudspeakers
can be adjusted to be louder than the other one. That may be wanted if
your favourite listening position in the room is closer to one speaker than to
the other one resulting in a difference in perceived volume.
Press, if necessary repeatedly, the button "BAL-L" to boost the left channel
BAL-L/R (13)
volume compared to the right channel volume. "BAL-R" can be used to
boost the right channel volume. You are free to change the setting in 10
steps to each side (right or left). The maximum difference appears at the set-
ting displaying "+10dB". While doing this, the display reads the current
BALANCE value and the side (R: right or L: left) to which the BALANCE has
been moved.
Operating this key activates or deactivates an attenuation of 8dB, which is
applied to the signal of the "OUTPUT" (9). The GAIN operation is useful, if
the combination of amplifier and speaker is so sensitive that the usable regi-
on of the volume control of the SA-94 lies at the lowest values. In this situati-
on the volume steps are too coarse.
GAIN (15)
In this case, after first reducing the volume for the sake of caution, press the
"GAIN" button. If the GAIN setting was "00dB" (normal) before, the dis-
play (4) now reads "-08dB". The perceived loudness is now reduced.
One more key press to "GAIN" restores the original gain setting (00dB).
The GAIN function can only be used via remote control and is not intended
to be toggled in everyday use!
" or "LEVEL
" or "LEVEL
" to turn it down. This can be done on the re-
" to turn up the volume.
