Measurements

5.1
Operational Steps (Figs. A, B, and C on the last page)
Carry out the following steps to calibrate the measurement ranges of your AVL DiTEST Speed 2000.
The current status of the calibration phase is displayed both on the AVL DiTEST Speed 2000 and on
the AVL Dual Sensor by the status LEDs.
The AVL DiTEST Speed 2000 and the dual sensor each have a multi-colored status-LED (red, yellow
and green).
A Initial status
• Make sure that the red status LED is lit before attaching the dual sensor. Make sure that the
correct operating mode for your measurements is selected on the AVL DiTEST Speed 2000.
In measurement mode, assuming that the AVL DiTEST Speed 2000 is being powered by
electrical current and is correctly connected to the exhaust gas tester, the red status LED is
lit.
B Select the mounting position/engine idle
• Attach the AVL Dual Sensor at a suitable site (see Section. 5.3).
• Let the engine at operating temperature run at constant idle speed. After approx. 3 to 10
seconds the status-LED lights up yellow on both the AVL DiTEST Speed 2000 and the dual
sensor.
This means that the idle speed has been measured and the attachment site is appropriate
for measuring speed values, if the engine is run at a constant speed.
• If the status LEDs do not illuminate as described, select another attachment site
C Rev the engine to a high speed
• Increase the speed of the diesel motor to a high level (upper calibration point, approx.
70...90 % of the regulated speed) and maintain it till the status-LED on the AVL DiTEST
Speed 2000 changes to green.
Now rev the engine to cut-off speed.
NOTICE
When first starting, check that the engine regulates correctly!
For gasoline engines, quickly rev to a high speed (approx. the highest that you want to
measure, any speed between 2000 and 6000 RPM). Hold this speed until the red status LED
goes out on the AVL DiTEST Speed 2000 (after 5 seconds max.).
The status LEDs on the AVL DiTEST Speed 2000 and the AVL Dual Sensor are now green.
This means that the highest speed has been detected and the AVL DiTEST Speed 2000 is
also able to measure dynamic speed measurements at the mounting point selected as
typically occur during emissions testing.
If the status LEDs do not illuminate as described, select another mounting point.
5.2
Measurements on Motorbikes
The dual sensor of the AVL DiTEST Speed 2000 must be attached to the motorbike at a suitable
magnetic point.
Not all mounting points are suitable for ensuring a trouble-free measuring procedure.
The following are important characteristics for the mounting point:
The sensor needs to be attached near to the engine, but not necessarily on the engine itself. You
must make sure that the base of the sensor has a full contact surface
For idle-engine speed calibration on motorbikes, the AVL DiTEST Speed 2000 analysis
software requires a little more time than for automobiles.
