Art-Net™-Only Configuration
An Art-Net™-only control system is where all the control signals run over Neutrik®
etherCON® cables and into the etherCON® port of the Next™ NXT-1.
Art-Net™ is a protocol for sending DMX information over a physical and digital structure
similar to a local area network, or the Internet. The DMX information is packaged inside the
Art-Net™ information allowing a single cable to carry many DMX universes.
A 3- or 5-pin DMX cable carries only one universe, or 512 channels of DMX, which becomes
limiting with products like the Next™ NXT-1 which uses up to 119 channels. A single 3- or 5-
pin DMX cable daisy chain can send signals to just 4 Next™ NXT-1 products.
A single Neutrik® etherCON® cable running Art-Net™ III carries 32,768 universes or
16,777,216 channels of DMX, enough for 140,985 Next™ NXT-1 products.
Art-Net™ control systems have enough channels and the speed to send video content as
well as movement information to the Next™ NXT-1. Ultimately, video content is translated
into DMX signals that map the pixels to become the video content.
Some media servers control both video content and movement. When using one of these
media servers there is no need for a lighting controller. Some media servers control video
content only. When using one of these media servers there is a need for a lighting controller
to control movement.
When using a media server for video content and lighting controller for movement, set the
DMX personality to the maximum channels of that personality so the pixel mapping control
channels are activated and respond to the video content. Set the media server to send video
content to the pixel mapping channels only (channels 7 through 106). Set the lighting
controller to send information to all the channels so it can control movement and display
colors when there is not video content.
Make sure the lighting controller fixture profile sends DMX signals down the
movement channels without sending any DMX signals down the pixel
mapping channels. If the DMX controller sends ghost signals down the pixel
mapping channels it could interfere with the video signal.
Art-Net™ configuration requires setting the Art-Net™ network addresses, as well as the DMX
personality and address. The network address information is determined by the design of the
control system network. The network address information consists of the following:
IP Mode and
Address
Net
Subnet
Universe
Start
Channel
In Art-Net™-only mode the DMX address is set in Art-Net Setup > Start
Channel.
Next™ NXT-1 User Manual Rev. 1
The IP address is the product's unique identifier on the control system. IP addresses
can be static, DCHP, or manual. A static IP address uses the product's default IP
address. A manual IP address is set through the menu. A DCHP IP address is assigned
every time the product is attached to a network, and it changes.
Net is the address of the control system network to which the Next™ NXT-1 is attached.
It can be any number from 0127 for a total of 128 networks.
Subnet is the address of the subnet to which the Next™ NXT-1 is attached. It can be
any number from 0–15 for a total of 16 subnets within the network.
Universe is the DMX universe to which the Next™ NXT-1 is attached. It can be any
number from 0–15 for a total of 16 DMX universes within the subnet.
The start channel is the DMX starting address for the Next™ NXT-1. This setting
overrides the DMX address in the DMX Functions option.
