CAUTION:
The use of a pump protector is recommended to prevent
cold weather damage during storage over the winter
months.
CHECKING/CLEANING AIR FILTER
See Figure 20.
A dirty air filter will cause starting difficulty, loss of perfor-
mance, and shorten the life span of the engine. Check the
air filter monthly. For best performance, replace the air filter
at least once a year.
 Remove the wing nut, then remove the air filter cover.
 Remove the second wing nut, then remove the air filter
unit.
 If the foam filter element is dirty, remove it from the air
filter unit. Clean the foam filter element with warm soapy
water. Rinse and let dry.
NOTE: If the air filter unit is dirty or damaged, it must be
replaced. If the foam filter element is damaged, it should
also be replaced.
MAINTENANCE
 Apply a light coat of engine oil to the foam filter element,
then squeeze it out.
 Replace the foam filter element on the air filter unit.
 Replace the air filter unit and reinstall wing nut to se-
cure.
 Replace the air filter cover and reinstall second wing nut
to secure.
NOTE: Do not run the engine without both the foam filter
element and the air filter. Rapid engine wear will result.
PREPARING FOR USE AFTER STORAGE
 Pull the recoil starter grip three or four times to clean
lubricant from the combustion chamber.
 Remove spark plug from the cylinder. Wipe lubricant from
the spark plug and return it to the cylinder.
 Reconnect the spark plug wire.
 Refuel the machine as described earlier in the operator's
manual.
