enUS - Instructions for use
For your safety
WARNING
!
You must read and understand these instructions for use
before you use the particulate respirator; and you must
strictly follow these instructions.
Failure to do so could lead to sickness or death.
If you have any questions concerning these instructions or how to
properly use the particulate respirator, ask your supervisor or call
Dräger in the USA (see Approval Label). In other countries, please
contact the respective Dräger subsidiary or your local dealer.
Supervisors have to ensure that in their field of responsibility all
users are familiar with these instructions for use and will use the
particulate respirators in strict accordance with these instructions
for use.
Description
®
1)
The Dräger X-plore
1950
series are particulate respirators with
protection class N95.
The particulate respirators are available in different sizes which are
indicated by "S"and "M/L".
If the designation contains "V", the particulate respirator features
an exhalation valve which facilitates exhalation during use.
Intended use
The particulate respirators are designed to reduce the percentage
of certain solid and liquid airborne particles that a user will inhale
when working in certain environments. The particulate respirators
do NOT eliminate the risk of inhaling airborne particles.
Dräger X-plore 1950 particulate respirators may be used for
airborne solid particles such as from grinding, sanding, sweeping,
sawing or processing minerals; and for liquid particles or
particulate aerosols that do not contain oil.
Dräger X-plore 1950 are NIOSH-rated for 95 % filtration efficiency
against solid and liquid aerosols that do not contain oil ("N95").
In the United States these particulate respirators are intended for
occupational use only.
Approvals
The particulate respirators' performance characteristics - e.g. the
types and percentages of the particles that they filter - fulfill the
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health ("NIOSH")
standards set forth at 42 CFR, Part 84. For more information see
Approval Label.
Limitations on use
Never use an individual particulate respirator for more than
one single 8-hour work shift.
Replace the particulate respirator as soon as you notice any
difficulty in inhaling.
Never use the particulate respirators in atmospheres
containing less than 19.5 % oxygen, since these particulate
respirators do not supply oxygen.
Never use the particulate respirators in atmospheres
containing oil aerosols.
Do not enter unventilated areas such as containers, shafts or
ducts when wearing one of the mentioned particulate
respirators.
Never use the particulate respirators as protection against
chemical, biological, radioactive, or nuclear (CBRN) warfare
hazards.
Never use a damaged, used, or expired particulate respirator.
Never use the particulate respirators for protection against
inhaling
paint spray
gases
vapors
asbestos particles
sandblasting particles
lead
arsenic
4,4' methylene dianiline (MDA)
cadmium
other contaminants that are unknown or immediately
dangerous to life or health.
Never use the particulate respirators as protection against
radioactive particles and radiation.
Never use the particulate respirators in atmospheres with
contaminant concentrations that exceed 10 times the
Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL), specific OSHA standards,
or other applicable regulations, whichever is lower. For PELs
please refer to OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.1000.
If specific OSHA or other applicable regulations apply to a
certain substance or application, you must strictly follow these
regulations.
When used to reduce inhalation of silica particles, you must
additionally adhere to all requirements of OSHA regulation 29
CFR 1926.1153 and/or 29 CFR 1910.1053.
General warnings and cautions
A properly selected particulate respirator is essential to protect
your health. Before using this particulate respirator, consult an
Industrial Hygienist or Occupational Safety Professional to
determine the suitability for your intended use.
Before occupational use of this respirator, a written respiratory
protection program must be implemented meeting all the local
government requirements. In the United States, employers
must comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 which includes
medical evaluation, training, and fit testing. Particulate
respirators that are properly selected and fitted will only reduce
the contaminant concentration.
Do not modify the particulate respirators.
Do not use the particulate respirators as surgical masks.
Persons with breathing difficulties, such as asthma or with a
history of heart disease, should consult a physician and
complete a medical evaluation prior to use.

Do not use with beard or facial hair or other conditions that
prevent a good seal between the face and the sealing surface
of the respirator.
Do not share particulate respirators with other people for
hygienic reasons.
The respirators are not designed to be used by children.
These particulate respirators are not intended for use as
protection against bacterial or viral agents such as avian (bird)
flu virus, SARS or any other bacterial, viral or biological agents.
Never remove your respirator when you are in contaminated
areas! The outer surface of the respirator must be treated as if
it is contaminated at all times. Wash hands immediately after
removing the respirator.

Use and donning
1. Remove the particulate respirator from its packaging.
2. Prior to use, make sure that there are no holes in the breathing
zone and that the particulate respirator is not damaged. Pay
particular attention to the weld of the head strap loops (see
figure B). If the particulate respirator is damaged, use a new
one.
3. Ensure that head and eye protection do not interfere with the
particulate respirator.
4. Unfold the particulate respirator and slightly preform the centre
of the nose clip (see figure A).
5. Hold the mask in one hand and expand the loop on the harness
until the top loop almost lies against the particulate respirator
(see figure B).
6. Hold the particulate respirator under the chin and over the
nose so that the foam rests on the nose (see figure C). Stretch
the bottom loop and pull it over the head to the neck (see figure
C-1). Position the top loop high on the back of the head (see
figure C-2).
7. Adjust the length of the loops (see figure D) so that the
particulate respirator sits comfortably on the head and the
tension is evenly distributed.
8. Adjust the nose clip to the shape of the nose, using both hands
(see figure E). Adjustment using only one hand might impede
the tight fit.
9. Perform a seal check:
Particulate respirators without valve:
Cup both hands over the particulate respirator being care-
ful not to disturb the fit of the respirator. Exhale vigorously
(see figure F).
Particulate respirators with valve:
Cup both hands over the particulate respirator being care-
ful not to disturb the fit of the respirator. Inhale vigorously.
If air leaks at the sides of the particulate respirator, adjust
the particulate respirator until it fits properly. Make sure
that the nose clip fits the shape of your nose.
WARNING
!
If you cannot achieve satisfactory fit, do NOT enter the
contaminated area. See your supervisor.
Failure to do so could lead to sickness or death.
Duration of use
The number of hours that the particulate respirators may be used
depends on several factors, including the concentration of
contaminants in the air, and the amount of work that the user is
performing. but must in no case exceed 8 hours (see "Limitations
on use").
Leave the work area if dizziness or other signs of distress occur.
Storage and care
Always store the particulate respirators in their original packaging
in a cool, dry room in such a way that they cannot be damaged.
Avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Do not store the particulate
respirators after the indicated expiry date.
Make sure the particulate respirators are clean. Never try to clean
a particulate respirator.
Storage temperature: -4 °F to 104 °F (-20 °C to 40 °C)
Relative humidity: maximum 80 %
Disposal
Used particulate respirators must be disposed of in accordance
with local disposal regulations.
