PROCEDURES FOR PRUNING WITH CABLES AND
SHOULDER HARNESS STRAP (FIG. E)
Important! Pruning chain saw operators who work above ground with cables and
harnesses must never work alone.
Important! Pruning chain saw operators must have been instructed and trained on how
to safely climb and use ropes, spring clips and harnesses.
Important! Pruning chain saw operators must be equipped with safety devices such as
ropes, harnesses, spring clips, straps and all other equipment necessary for working
in trees.
Preliminary operations (Fig.E)
The chain saw must be checked and working properly, topped off with oil and fuel, and
warmed up and then turned off by the operator on the ground.
The chain saw must be secured with a strap suitable for connecting it to the operator's
harness (Fig.E1).
- Secure the chain saw with the strap using the provided coupling (Fig. A 33).
- Use spring clips to secure the chain saw to the harness by means of the strap.
- Check that the chain saw is safely secured when it is given to the operator.
- Check that the chain saw is secured to the harness before removing it from the means
used to pass it to the operator.
The risk of damage when moving around the tree is reduced when the chain saw is secured
to the harness.
Always turn the chain saw off when it is secured to the harness.
Secure the chain saw, evenly balanced on the centre back of the harness so that it does
not interfere with the climbing cables (Fig.E2).
When moving the chain saw's couplings, make sure that it is always connected at two points.
Using the chain saw in a tree
Find a safe position in the tree. Most accidents happen due to incorrect and unsafe po-
stures. Do not mount on the branch you are going to cut. Use of the chain saw with one
hand is forbidden;
this type of use increases the risk of injury due to:
- kickback without a firm grip on the saw.
- Lack of control, increasing the risk of contact between the chain saw and cables and
parts of the operator's body.
- Loss of control due to dangerous and unstable work positions with the possibility of
contact with the running chain saw.
Safe position for use with two hands.
For a safe grip with two hands, maintain a safe position with the chain saw so that it can
be used:
- at hip level, for cutting horizontal sections.
- At the solar plexus level, for cutting vertical sections.
When cutting vertical trunks, additional points of support by means of straps may be
necessary.
When moving the rope, keep your balance by shifting your weight and adding points of
support (Fig.E3-4).
Starting the chain saw in a tree
To start a chain saw in a tree:
- Activate the chain brake before starting.
- Hold the chain saw away from the body.
- For the left side, hold the chain saw by the front handle with the left hand and pull the
starter cord with the right hand.
- For the right side, hold the chain saw by the front handle with the right hand and pull the
starter cord with the left hand.
The chain brake must always be engaged.
Before every critical cut, check that there is enough fuel for the cut.
Using the chain saw with one hand only
Cutting with one hand only is dangerous and forbidden.
If necessary and whenever possible, use a hand saw to limit risk.
Freeing a jammed chain saw
If the chain saw gets stuck during a cut:
- turn off the chain saw and secure it to the tree or a safety cable.
- pull on the chain saw, if necessary, from the side of the cut until the branch moves.
- if necessary, make a cut with another chain saw or a hand saw, at least 30 cm from the
stuck chain saw; the cut must be performed by the side of the branch and not by the side
of the tree trunk so that the saw will not be dragged to the ground from the same branch.
FELLING TREES AND SAFETY PROCEDURES
The following topics will be discussed below:
1. Advice for those using the chain saw for the first time
2. Useful suggestions concerning safety gear
3. Limiting access to danger zones
4. Precautions to be taken according to weather conditions for people in the area
and eventual local regulations.
5. Preparing and using escape routes
6. Felling trees on slopes
7. Felling trees in relation to the saw's cutting capacity.
8. How to control the fall direction of the tree being cut.
9. Cutting branches (debranching)
10. Cutting wood on supports
1. Advice for those using the chain saw for the first time
Those who are using the chain saw for the first time should receive practical instructions
concerning its use and gear by an expert operator. A beginner should first practice by
cutting wood on a trestle or other support.
2. Useful suggestions concerning safety gear
For protection from other risks related to the use of this tool, adequate clothing and gear
must be used. In general, the following devices should be used:
- Heavy-duty padded trousers.
- Coloured jacket to ensure that the operator is easily visible.
- Heavy-duty leggings and heavy-duty, safety shoes with non-skid soles and steel toes.
- Heavy-duty gloves and, if possible, insulated to dampen vibrations.
- Helmet with visor for protection from falling branches and materials.
- Soundproof headphones to protect hearing.
3. Limiting access to danger zones
Limit access to the area by marking it off with warning signs.
4. Precautions to be taken according to weather conditions for people in the area and
eventual local regulations.
- IMPORTANT! Do not use the chain saw in adverse weather conditions: rain, snow, low
visibility, near cables or electrical networks, or where there may be a risk of explosions.
- Never cut in the presence of people or animals.
- Find out about any restrictions on forest cutting issued by institutions, municipal...
5. Preparing and using escape routes (see also point 6)
- IMPORTANT! Before you begin felling a tree, you must decide the fall direction, identify
the escape route and then eliminate all obstacles along it.
N.B.: The direction of the fall is determined by the cut.
6. Felling trees on slopes
- IMPORTANT! When felling a tree on a slope, the operator must position himself on the
upper side because, once the tree is cut, it will roll downhill.
7. Felling trees in relation to the saw's cutting capacity.
Do not make cuts on diameters greater than the maximum cutting length (see technical
specifications). It is always better not to exaggerate the diameter of the cut and consider
the branch weight.
8.How to control the fall direction of the tree being cut.
Usually, felling a tree consists of two main cuts, the face cut (C Fig.1) and the undercut
(D. Fig. 1), which is needed to fell the branch.
- Begin with the cut (C) on the side of the tree facing the direction of the fall (E).
- The cut must be as deep as about ¼ of the branch diameter (F).
- After this operation, make the cut (D) on the other side of the branch at about 3-5 cm
above the height of the face cut (Fig. 1).
- Do not walk under the branch after you have made the cut.
- IMPORTANT! Before proceeding with the final cut, check that there are no persons,
animals, or objects in the fall area.
- IMPORTANT! When the branch begins to fall, extract the chain saw from the cut, lay it on
the ground, and leave the area quickly along the escape route.
9. Cutting branches (debranching)
Introduction:
This operation consists of cutting the branches of felled trees.
Note: Do not cut the branches that support the felled tree before cutting it in pieces. (Fig.3)
- IMPORTANT! Do not climb onto the trunk to cut it.
10. Cutting wood on supports (trestles)
In order to work easily and safely, it is important to maintain a correct position:
- Distribute your weight on both feet.
- Hold the chain saw to your right while cutting.
- Keep your left arm as straight as possible.
