25 Inspection and Maintenance

► Turn the screw (1) counterclockwise until the
shroud (2) can be removed.
► Remove the shroud.
► Remove the air filter (3).
► Knock out the air filter or blow it clear with
compressed air from the inside outwards.
► If the air filter is damaged, replace it.
► Spray the outside and inside of the air filter
with STIHL special cleaner or a cleaning agent
with a pH value higher than 12.
► Allow STIHL special cleaner or cleaning agent
to act for 10 minutes.
► Rinse the inside then the outside of the air fil‐
ter under running water. Never spray the air fil‐
ter with a pressure washer.
► Allow the air filter to air dry.
► Place the air filter in position.
► Place the shroud in position.
► Tighten the screw (1).
WARNING
■ Cleaning agent may cause irritation if it con‐
tacts the skin or eyes. Avoid contact. Wear
suitable eye protection. Read and follow all
safety precautions that accompany the clean‐
ing agent. In case of contact with the skin:
Wash affected areas with plenty of water and
soap. In case of contact with the eyes: Rinse
eyes with plenty of water for at least
15 minutes and seek medical advice.
NOTICE
■ To reduce the risk of damage, never use a tool
to install, pry out or re-insert the air filter.
NOTICE
■ Exposure to high temperatures and oil can
damage the air filter and reduce filtering effi‐
ciency. Allow the filter to air dry away from
external heat sources. Keep the filter away
from oil.

25.1
Inspecting and Maintaining the
Chain Saw
WARNING
■ To reduce the risk of personal injury from unin‐
tended activation, remove the battery before
inspecting the chain saw or carrying out any
maintenance,

Proper maintenance of the chain saw includes
the following activities:
► Cleaning the air filter every month of opera‐
tion.
► Inspecting the chain sprocket periodically and
having a worn sprocket replaced by an author‐
ized STIHL servicing dealer.
► Inspecting the guide bar for proper groove
depth and spread and replacing the guide bar
it if it shows signs of excessive wear or dam‐
age.
► Periodically sharpening the chain, maintaining
the depth limiting guides at the appropriate
height, and replacing the saw chain when indi‐
cated by the relevant wear marks, or when the
chain is damaged or shows signs of excessive
wear.
► Having worn, missing or damaged safety
labels replaced by an authorized STIHL serv‐
icing dealer.
25.2
Inspecting and Maintaining the
Chain Sprocket
► Switch off the chain saw, engage the chain
brake and remove the battery.
► Disengage the chain brake,
► Remove the chain sprocket cover, saw chain
and guide bar.

► Check the chain sprocket cover for wear
marks.
► If the wear marks are deeper than
a = 0.020 in. (0.5 mm), have the chain
sprocket replaced.
