► Point the guide bar toward a bright surface.
► Switch on the chain saw,
The chain should throw off a small amount of
oil.
If the chain oil cannot be seen, check the oil
level and refill the tank as necessary.
► Test the chain lubrication again.
► If chain lubrication oil is still not visible, the
lubrication mechanism is not functioning. Take
the saw to an authorized STIHL servicing
dealer to be repaired before use.

20 During Operation

20.1

Selecting the Power Level

When using the STIHL AP 500 S battery, the
saw can be operated at three different power set‐
tings, indicated by LEDs near the rear handle:
: Sawing, low chain speed, low
power
: Felling, bucking, average chain
speed, maximum power
: Limbing, maximum chain speed,
maximum power
The higher the power level, the faster the cutting
attachment will rotate.
To set the power level:

► Depress and hold the trigger switch lock‐
out (1).
► While holding the trigger switch lockout, press
down the retaining button (2) with your thumb
and release it.
The Status LED (3) and the LED showing the
current power level glow.
► Press the power level selector (4) to activate
the next power level.
Performing this operation at the highest power
level will cause the unit to return to the first
power level.
Generally, battery life will be shorter when oper‐
ating continuously at the higher power levels.
When using the AP 300 S, only the ECO power
level is available.

21 After Finishing Work

21.1
Preparing for Transportation or
Storage
WARNING
■ To reduce the risk of personal injury from unin‐
tended activation or unauthorized use, switch
off the chain saw, engage the chain brake and
remove the battery before transporting the
chain saw or putting it down. To reduce the
risk of injuries from the sharp cutters on the
chain, always cover the guide bar with the
chain scabbard before transporting or storing
the saw.
To prepare the saw for transportation or storage:
► Switch off the chain saw,
► Engage the chain brake,
► Remove the battery,
► Release the chain brake and loosen the chain.
► Re-engage the chain brake.
► Slide a chain scabbard over the guide bar so
that it covers the entire guide bar.
► If the battery or chain saw became wet during
operation, allow them to dry separately and
completely before charging or storing,
► Before using the saw, remember to re-tension
the chain.
NOTICE
■ The chain contracts as it cools down. Failing
to loosen the chain after finishing work can
damage the drive shaft and bearings.

► Slide a chain scabbard over the guide bar so
that it covers the entire guide bar.
