1 For your safety

The decomposition system AOD 1 is designed for the test sample decomposition of
Permitted uses
halogenated and sulphurous substances. The system must only be used for this
purpose in conjunction with the original IKA
information, see the operating manual for the reaction vessel.
The operator of this equipment must ensure safe operation of the decomposition

conditions
vessel AOD 1.1 by installing a suitable safety device (e.g. safety guard AOD 1.3).
The maximum energy input in the decomposition vessel must not exceed
30000 J and the sample mass should therefore be chosen accordingly. The
maximum permitted operating pressure is 195 bar; do not exceed this pres-
sure. The maximum permitted operating temperature is 50°C; do not exceed
this temperature.
Do not overfill the decomposition vessel with the sample substance. Fill the
decomposition vessel with oxygen at a pressure not exceeding the permitted
maximum of 40 bar. Check the pressure on the pressure reducer. Before the
start of every combustion cycle, perform a seal test (following the instructions
in the decomposition vessel operating manual).
Some substances tend to combust in an explosive manner due to peroxide build-up.
Explosive
substances
This can cause the decomposition vessel to burst.
The decomposition vessel AOD 1.1 must not be used for the testing of explo-
sive samples.
Substances whose combustion behaviour is unknown must be tested prior to com-

bustion in the decomposition vessel AOD 1.1 to establish there combustion behav-
iour (explosion hazard). When you burn an unknown sample, maintain a safe dis-
tance from the decomposition vessel. With the guard AOD 1.3 fitted, the minimum
safe distance is 2 metres.
Benzoic acid must only be burnt in its compressed form. Combustible dusts and
powders must be pressed before testing. Explosion hazard: over-dried dusts and
powders (e.g. wood shavings and sawdust, hay and straw) burn in an explosive
manner. Wet these substances before testing. Keep slightly flammable fluids with a
low vapour pressure (tetramethyl-dihydrogendisiloxan) away from cotton yarn; pre-
vent all contact between these two substances.
Observe the relevant health and safety regulations. Always wear personal pro-
tection equipment (PPE).
