16.1
Required Equipment and Materials
• Scalpel
For drainage:
• Saline solution
• Syringe with Luer lock connector (male)
• Drainage bag with Luer lock connector (male)
• Thorax drainage system
All in sterile condition.
16.2
Product Preparation
1.
Remove the product from its packaging above a sterile surface.
2.
Ensure that the pointed stylet is inserted in the axial port and is screwed on tightly.
ATTENTION: Screw the stylet to the three-way stopcock only enough to ensure grip
and seal but to allow its unscrewing with minimal effort.
3.
Ensure that the lateral port is sealed with a sealing cap.
4.
Ensure that all components of the trocar are firmly connected with each other.
16.3
Puncturing
1.
Determine the point of puncture.
2.
Make an incision in the skin of about 3 mm in length with the tip of a scalpel.
3.
Keep the trocar perpendicularly to the thorax wall. Place the index finger on the
trocar to control the trocar insertion.
4.
Push the trocar with the pointed stylet through the skin and the outer and middle
intercostal muscles until you can feel a decrease in tissue resistance. ATTENTION: Do
not puncture the pleura yet.
5.
Remove the pointed stylet. ATTENTION: Close the axial port of the three-way
stopcock until insertion of the blunt stylet.
6.
Introduce the blunt stylet until the end of the cannula and screw to the three-way
stopcock. ATTENTION: Screw the stylet to the three-way stopcock only enough to
ensure grip and seal but to allow its unscrewing with minimal effort.
