example, with white matter between the plates, plates touching). If mechanical defects are apparent do not attempt to
charge the battery, have it battery professionally assessed.
6. If the battery is new, before connecting the charger read the battery manufacturer's safety and operational instructions
carefully. If applicable, carefully and exactly follow acid fi lling instructions.
USING THE OPTIMATE PRO-S OR PRO2: PROCEEDING TO CHARGE
For safety reasons, the OptiMate output will only activate if a battery retaining at least 2V is connected, whereupon the
micro processor instantly diagnoses the battery condition and engages the appropriate charge mode and lights the
corresponding charge status LED.
The charger's special recovery mode cannot engage if it senses that the battery is still connected to a vehicle wiring
circuit which effectively offers a lower electrical resistance than the battery on its own. However, if the deep-discharged
battery is not removed for recovery, neither battery nor vehicle electronics will be damaged.
VERY FLAT NEGLECTED BATTERIES:
important for relatively small batteries such as those used on motorcycles, lawn tractors, jet-ski's, snowmobiles and
similar: A battery left deep-discharged for an extended period may develop permanent damage in one or more cells. Such
batteries may heat up excessively during high current charging.
Monitor the battery temperature during the fi rst hour, then hourly there-after. Check for unusual signs, such as bubbling or
leaking electrolyte, heightened activity in one cell compared to others, or hissing sounds. If at any time the battery is
uncomfortably hot to touch or you notice any unusual signs, DISCONNECT THE CHARGER IMMEDIATELY.
The LED indicators referred to below, and the clauses dealing with them, are sequenced as they may come on through
the course of the programme.

IMPORTANT SWITCH SELECTIONS PRIOR TO USING THE CHARGER: PROGRAMME OUTLINE
• A switch to select the input voltage for 115 or 230 Volts is located at the back of the charger. Make sure the input
voltage setting is correct for your AC electrical supply before making any connections.
• OptiMate PRO-S only: Make the appropriate output selection before charging. The NEW LED #1, 2A LED #2 or 4A LED #3
will indicate the chosen selection once the charger is powered up.
NEW - Select for the fi rst activating charge of a new battery and before installing into a vehicle. The NEW programme
(LED #1) disables recover charge (stage 5) and limits charging to 60 minutes for programme stages 6.1 to 6.3 and
also limits testing to a single 10 minute period after which the MAINTENANCE CHARGE CYCLE continues until the
battery is disconnected.
NOTE: A new battery has been successfully activated once LED #7 indicates steadily.
2A / 4A - Select the appropriate maximum charge current (2 / 4A) from the table on the front of the charger's enclosure
for USED batteries (or NEW batteries that may have been stored for extensive periods following activation) - The 2A /
4A programme limits charging to 12 hours for programme stages 5.1 through 6.3. Thereafter the voltage retention
tests and battery maintenance charging (LED #7,8,9) programme continues until the battery is disconnected.
• OptiMate PRO-2 only: No charge selection is required. The programme limits charging to 48 hours for programme stages
5.1 through 6.3.Thereafter the voltage retention tests and battery maintenance charging (LED #7,8,9) programme continues
until the battery is disconnected.
CONNECTION TO THE INPUT (WALL SOCKET) AND SWITCHING ON THE CHARGER:
the charger via the power receptacle at the back of the charger, and insert the power plug into the wall socket (and switch on
the socket outlet if applicable). The charger's on-off switch is located at the back of the charger.
1. 2. 3.
When switched on, for the OptiMate PRO-S model one of the current selection LEDs #1, or 2, or 3, will indicate. For
the OptiMate PRO2 the power indicators (LEDs #1 and 2) for both charging circuits, will light and all CHARGE and TEST LEDs
(LEDs #5 to 9) will fl ash twice briefl y to confi rm micro processor health. If not, check the AC supply and the power cord. If for
any reason the input protection fuse located in the base of the charger should fail, replace it only with a similar new fuse of
identical type and 3 Amp rating.
4.
If the battery connections are inverted, no charge or test status LEDs will light following the micro processor health
confi rmation. For OptiMate PRO-S only: The inverse polarity LED #4 will light. Both models: The charger is automatically
protected against this error and no damage will result. Disconnect at the battery and reconnect correctly.
