1.
General
The BSA pedal force meter is needed to measure the pedal force
required to effectively test the brakes of motor vehicles.
The legislation stipulates a minimal deceleration of z = 40 % at a
maximum pedal force of 800 N. It is best to use a pedal force meter
to avoid exceeding the maximum pedal force.
2.
Construction
The pedal force meter consists of a force meter with coiled cable
and of a digital control and display unit.
2.1
Force Meter
The coiled cable connects the meter to the control and display
unit. The meter utilizes the strain gauge technology. The pedal
force is measured in Deca-Newtons (daN).
2.2
The Control and Display Unit
The control and display unit is operated with a nickel-cadmium
battery (special accessory 1 687 335 002). The pedal force
measured is indicated in Deca-Newtons.
Press key
(figure 1, item 3) to activate the unit. The zero point
calibration is performed when the key N is pressed (figure 1,
item 2). The maximum pedal force can be stored by pressing the
key S (figure 1, item 1).
3.
Measurement
3.1
Preparations for the Measurement
Place the force meter (transducer) on the brake pedal with the
black rubber up and secure it with the rubber band included in the
scope of delivery.
Press the key to activate the control and display unit. Then, press
to conduct the zero point calibration. Press the key N
the key
until "000" appears in the display. Press the key S to activate the
automatic storage and display of the maximum pedal force (the
symbol , is displayed).
Do not perform a zero point calibration while the
automatic measured-value storage is activated,
otherwise measured values may be corrupted.
Remark:
The test bench also memorizes measured values if the power
supply of the pedal force meter occurs from the test bench.

3.2

Measuring Process

The actual pedal force is indicated when the brake pedal is
depressed. When the automatic memory is activated the maxi-
mum pedal force is stored and indicated.
3.3
Measurement of the Manual Actuation Force
The force required to manually actuate the parking brake (hand
brake) can be measured using a power transmitter (special
accessory 1 688 040 240). To do so, attach the force meter (strain
gauge) to the top and bottom part of the power transmitter with 2
knurled screws.
3.4
Utilization of Dynamic Brake Analyzers for 4-
Wheel Drive Vehicles
3.4.1 At Dynamic Brake Analyzers BPS 191/192
Use as described under § 3.
3.4.2 At Brake System Analyzers BSA 201/202
- The power is supplied via a connecting cable from the brake
system analyzer. This cable, which is included in the scope of
delivery, is plugged into the socket (figure 1, item 4).
- The measured maximum pedal force is stored in the brake
system analyzer.
4.
Maintenance
If "Bat" appears in the display, the nickel-cadmium battery
(special accessory 1 687 335 002) has to be charged with the
battery charger (special accessory 1 687 320 096). The charger
is plugged into the socket in figure 1, item 4.
The nickel-cadmium battery 1 687 335 002 is a special
waste because of the technical composition and must
be disposed accordingly after replacing.
Besides the public waste disposal by the authorities,
these nickel-cadmium batteries can be sent to
IA4/W088815 – Zentralinstandsetzung – for disposal.
The accumulator is not charged on delivery. The pedal force meter
must be switched off during the first charging process. The
charging time exceeds 8 hours. The operating time after charging
is about 15 hours.
