Connecting intrinsically safe components (creepage distances and clearances)
 Maintain creepage distances and clearances that run between the conductive parts
of the connection terminals in intrinsically safe circuits to earthed or potential-free,
conductive parts. The distances must be at least equal to the distances specified in
Table 5 of ANSI/ISA/UL 60079-11; CSA C22.2 no. 60079-11.
 For separated, intrinsically safe electric circuits: Set up a safe distance between the
uncoated, conductive parts of external connections, which meets the following
requirements:
• Minimum 6 mm/0.24 inch between the separated, intrinsically safe circuits
• At least 3 mm/0.12 inch to earthed parts if a possible connection to earth has not been
considered in the safety analysis.
6.2.6 Bridging Terminals
"Increased safety" terminals only allow one conductor on either side of the terminal.
Should more termination points be required, the terminals need to be bridged with
appropriate jumpers from the same manufacturer as the terminals. Bridge connections are
inserted into the centre recessed areas of the appropriate terminal blocks and fastened to the
current bar. Use of bridges may reduce the current rating of the terminal. Contact the terminal
manufacturer for additional information.
Partitions provide visual separation between groups of terminal blocks in an assembly.
Partitions are also required to provide electrical separation between adjacent bridging
connections.
An end plate can also be used to provide the electrical separation at bridging connections.
End Plates. The open side of each terminal block must be completely covered by an end
plate, or a partition. Use an end plate for the last block in an assembly or whenever the open
side of a terminal block abuts a block with smaller dimensions.
Creepage distances and clearances as specified in ANSI/UL 486E and ANSI/UL 60079-7
must be maintained (see chapter 6.2.4).
6.2.7 Closing the Enclosure
Before closing the cover, ensure that
 the cover, seal and mating surface are clear of dirt.
For covers with screws:
 Correctly align the cover.
 Place the cover on the enclosure and then tighten all screws.
For covers with a hinge and cam lock:
 Close the cover.
 Close the cam lock with the corresponding tool.
