1 - INTRODUCTION

The ELT96 / ELT97 equipment is an emergency locator transmitter which is automatically or manually
activated
at
impact,
121.5 MHz, 243 MHz, and 406 MHz and which can be identified by the system of COSPAS-SARSAT
satellites allowing to localize it more precisely.
A flexible antenna, supplied with the ELT, allows a portable mode use.
Note that the only difference between ELT96 and ELT97 is the setting of the crash sensor. In this
manual, the differences between them will be clearly shown (every time you read ELT96 or ELT97).

2 - DESCRIPTION

The ELT96 / 97 radiobeacon consists of an orange sealed case.
It is fitted with a flexible antenna located around the case to which it is linked by a cord. It comprises
the following elements on the front face :
a three-position switch "MAN/RESET-OFF-AUTO",
a red warning light,
an "ANT" plug to connect rigid or flexible antenna feeder,
a 26-pin connector (J1).
The shock crash sensor "g-switch" located in the upper part of the case, starts automatically ELT
transmission when deceleration, undergone by the ELT, is within the activation area defined by Crash
Sensor Response Curve as below :
ELT96 g-switch is set according to ED62 (EUROCAE)
-
ELT97 g-switch is set according to DO204 (RTCA)
-
The microprocessor card located in the lower part of the case manage the various parameters of the
ELT, as message to be transmitted and modulation signals. This card is programmed through a bench
which is external to the ELT.
The "AUTO TEST" of the remote control allows to check transmission power at 406 MHz, as well as
the condition of the 8 Lithium batteries.
The ELT is supplied by 4 Lithium non-rechargeable batteries and the shock crash sensor is supplied
by 4 Lithium non-rechargeable batteries.
A remote control box installed in the cockpit allows the pilot to activate the manual mode and check its
proper operation.
