The Original
Class 03.10 locomotives were originally fitted with elegant streamline cladding and were supplied by the
companies Borsig, Krupp and Krauss-Maffei. This class was an extension of the well-known Class 03.
The first 03.10 was made in 1939. However, due to the Second World War, only 60 of a planned 140 units
were manufactured. Following the example of the GDR National Railways (DR), the German Federal
Railways (DB) rebuilt the 3-cylinder-locomotives. After the war, 26 engines remained; by 1950 they had
shed their streamline cladding and were given a technical overhaul by the company Henschel in Kassel.
Due to significant signs of ageing in terms of the boilers' service life, Krupp manufactured welded boi-
lers with combustion chambers for the DB's Class 03.10 engines between 1957 and 1961. The tender was
built with protective caps for the coal box. Other alterations included smooth-running wheel sets on the
leading bogie and an automatic coal replenishment system.
From the autumn of 1958, all the locomotives were housed at the Hagen-Eckesey depot and operated
from there. The economic miracle brought increased demand for inter-city travel, prompting DB's use
of the 03.10 to pull express trains, which demonstrated the engine's power and speed. While in use,
it was unable to shake a number of teething problems. According to reports, the superheated steam
controller in particular caused considerable problems. Finally in 1966, all remaining Class 03.10 engines
were decommissioned and scrapped soon after.
