2. Preferably place a sheet over the mattress.
3. Place the patient on the mattress and use the patient restraints on the stretcher to secure the patient.
5. Cleaning and Disinfecting
After each use the vac mattress should be wiped with a moist cloth and then dried. If dirty the mattress should be
washed with soapy water and rinsed with clean water. Allow the mattress to dry completely before storage or usage.
If the mattress needs disinfecting first clean the mattress carefully and let it dry. Wipe the complete mattress with a
solution containing 70% alcohol or use the disinfectant called LYSETOL AF.
6. Maintenance and Repair
At frequent regular intervals the vacuum mattress, valve and pump must be checked for any visible damage.
At the same time the vacuum mattress must be tested for function and the suction operation of the suction pump must
be checked according to Section 7.
Leaks should be checked for by visual inspection or by slightly filling of the mattress with air, covering it with soapy water
all over the surfaces and the welds, then watch for air bubbles that may appear, which will indicate a leak. When filling
the mattress with air to check for leaks, ensure that the mattress is not filled so much such that it creates a pressure
within the mattress, which may then cause the mattress edge weld to split.
If any leak is found on the mattress, first clean the area around the leak and allow it to dry.
Find a repair patch of a suitable size from the repair kit and then spread the supplied glue all over the patch and all
around the area of the vacuum mattress where the patch will be applied.
Wait for the glue to become "dust dry" (approx. 2-3 minutes) and then place the patch on the area of glue and leakage.
Apply pressure to the whole area of the patch; making sure good contact has been established in the whole area and
that any air bubbles are removed.
The repair will have full strength after 24 hours, but can be used within a few minutes in case of emergency.
Note: Patient restraint straps are detachable, washable
and replaceable, washing in laundry bag, see label at the
60°
foot end restraint. If blood gets on the straps, soak in cold water first before washing
7. Testing the Vacuum Mattress and Pump
Straighten out the mattress on the floor, close the valve by turning it fully clockwise and connect the pump.
Evacuate the air until the mattress becomes rigid and leave it for about 2 hours. Check to ensure that the mattress is still
as rigid. Any loss of rigidity may indicate a leak in the vacuum mattress or through the valve. Check both for leaks and
correct functioning of the valve cap.
See Section 6 Maintenance and Repair or check the valve for leakage from the vac mattress.
If OK, try to insert a new valve and repeat the test again.
If the pump does not seem to be removing air from the vac mattress, check the pump function by removing it from the
vacuum mattress, place a finger over the orifice at the end of the pump tubing and pump a few times. A negative
pressure should be created in the tubing and should be felt at your fingertip.
If the pump does not function do not try to repair it, return it for service to your local dealer or to a Germa service centre.
8. Storage
After each use, check to ensure that the mattress is still operating correctly and made ready for its next use. Open the
valve by turning it fully clockwise to fully close then ½-1 turn anti-clockwise to open and put the mattress onto an even
surface. Make sure the granules have been distributed evenly, close the valve by turning clockwise and then fold the
mattress in its initial position.
The vacuum mattress can be stored on top of the stretcher, or folded in the storage bag, such that it will fit in the
designated storage area.
