English Directions for use
1. Introduction
The Child EasyFix Mattress is a vacuum mattress. The mattress can also be placed on top of a stretcher/trolley,
to be used as a patient mattress.
The Vacuum mattress is principally designed for the immobilisation of patients where bone and spinal injuries are
suspected. Deep tissue damage can also be avoided by using vacuum mattress.
The vacuum mattress is fitted with 3 carry handles on both sides. It is also equipped with four patient restraint straps,
each with Fix-Lock, Quick-release plastic buckles. Head restraint with hooks and loops.
The Vac mattress should be operated with a minimum of 2 trained operators when carrying the mattress a shorter
distance, Additional people may be required for heavier patients and when carrying longer distance. Additional carrying
belts can also be used to aid manual handling.
The Vac mattress can be dragged on the ground using the carry handles or by connecting a carrying belt or rope to the
Vac mattress, making sure to avoid rough surfaces or sharp edges on the ground along the route of movement.
The Child EasyFiX Mattress consists of an outer shell made from airtight material, which has a number of inner
chambers which contain granules. When Child EasyFix Vacuum Mattress, it is rigid it is not possible to mould it
any more. The mattress wraps around the patient offering an optimal support and stabilization, without exerting any
pressure on the patient.
The mattress can also be used to rescue and carry a patient in water. (See precautions section).
Recommendation: Usable life of 5 years
2. Precautions
Never mould the Vacuum Mattress on the top of the head or under the foot soles as it might cause
undesirable pressure against the spine.
On a regular basis check that the vacuum pump is functioning correctly, and physically test it by deploying the vac
mattress by removing air from it until the shell becomes hard.
Avoid handling the mattress next to sharp objects. If the mattress is being dragged along the ground, be aware of
obstacles on the ground, such as sharp stones, sticks, glass, sharp edges etc.
Check pump, Vacuum Mattress and carrying straps for any visible damage or wear and tear. Repair any damage as
required before re-using the Vacuum mattress. Change any defect parts immediately. Ensure that all parts are
present and operating, including the valve cap, patient restraints and buckles and head strap
Avoid handling the mattress next to open fire.
On a current basis check that the mattress has no visible cracks.
The vacuum mattress is unstable in water. You must never leave a patient unattended in water at any time.
When transporting in an aircraft, please note that the atmospheric pressure in the cabin may drop when reaching
higher altitudes and the vac mattress will therefore become less rigid. In this situation make sure to evacuate more
air from the mattress.
3. Description
The vacuum mattress consists of an outer shell made of hard-wearing PVC coated fabric and a unique granulate-filled
inner bag. When the air is evacuated from the vacuum mattress the individual granulates pack up together into a tight
mass, making the mattress rigid. Before and while the air is evacuated the mattress may be moulded and positioned
according to the shape of the patient, to give best immobilisation. An optimum support of the patient is obtained when all
air has been evacuated. This can be determined by the fact that it becomes more difficult to pump as less air remains in
the vac mattress, to the point where the pump cannot be moved any more once all the air has been removed.
The mattress is equipped with 3 carry handles on both sides. It is also equipped with four colour coded patient restraint
belts with Fix Lock buckles. When not in use, store the belts and fasten them by use of the buckles in the gap between
the row of handles and the mattress.
When the Vac mattress is not being used, and is not required to be used as a mattress on top of a trolley, the vac
mattress can be to folded and packed to store in the supplied protective bag together with pump and repair kit, taking up
less space.
