Table 1: Diagnosis of malfunctions
Problem
A. Smoky air / smoke
blowback

Possible cause
1. Smoke / smoky air coming from
the fire due to underpressure in
the room where it is installed
2. Poorly functioning flue duct
1. Moist wood.
2. Burning with too low efficiency,
because:
2.1 kindlings are too big;
2.2 primary air supply is closed too
quickly
2.3 there is too little ash on the fire
bottom
3. load is too large
1. Incomplete combustion
1. Moist wood.
2. Poorly draughting flue duct
3. Too little air supply
1. Overload by exceeding max.

Remedy
1. Open a skylight or slightly open a window to
supply fresh air; if possible, switch off the
cooker hood.
2. Have the flue duct inspected/cleaned
1. Use properly dried wood (3.1)
2. Allow the fire to burn through better:
2.1 use smaller kindlings
2.2 leave the air supply slide fully open for
longer
2.3 leave at least 2 cm of ash (3.4)
3. See Tabel 2 for using the recommended
amount of wood.
