BACK WALL INSTALLATION (Figure 7)
The most common location for BioLife is on the inside back wall of the aquarium. The Flow Deflector
forces water flow down and toward the front of the aquarium. This creates a rolling current from top to
bottom that helps keep particles suspended longer. In addition, water moves in an efficient lateral
pattern, either left or right depending on how the deflector is positioned.
Common external filters must be placed on the outside back wall of the tank, forcing the user to move
the aquarium away from the wall. Installed inside the aquarium, BioLife allows you to place the
aquarium next to the wall. The power cord of the pump and optional heater are the only part that is
located outside the aquarium.
SIDE WALL INSTALLATION (Figure 8)
BioLife may be installed on either side wall. There are several advantages to side wall installation. An
aquarium placed perpendicularly against the wall can serve as a room divider. This way, there are no
visual obstructions in the aquarium. Side wall installation also creates long sweeping currents across the
whole length of the aquarium, ensuring an even, continuous mix of water. There is no need for a deflec-
tor plate in this configuration, although it may be used to direct the water current down deep into the
tank before it creates currents.
Filter Bracket Installation
Figures 9 - 12 show how to install the Filter Bracket. If the 4 suction cups are not already on the Filter
Bracket, install them. Aluminum retaining straps are included in the package for extra support. If desired, attach the strap
on the bracket (Figure 9). Note: Aluminum straps may not be desirable for saltwater installations.
Ensure the aquarium's inside wall where the filter will be installed is clean and free from dirt, slime or algae. Attach the Filter
Bracket to the Filter and position the unit against the desired aquarium wall. Firmly press the unit against the glass wall.
Once the suction cups hold, unclip the filter from the bracket and remove from the aquarium (Figure 10) to allow the suction
cups to "set" for about an hour before weight is applied. This will ensure the suction cups will hold over time. Once the brack-
et is in position, use the double-sided adhesive (included) to fix the strap on the outer wall of the aquarium (Figure 11). After
the suction cups are "set", place the Filter on the Bracket (Figure 12). The Filter Case is attached to the bracket by sliding
horizontally to lock and unlock.

OPERATION
BioLife is easy to operate. After you have installed the unit in the aquarium, you can plug the power cord into a power
supply. Note: if you have installed a Tronic heater (sold separately), wait for at least 20 min-
utes to allow the unit to adjust to the water temperature.
Caution
Unplug the heater (if installed) when performing any water change that exposes the core to
air. Sudden refilling when the core is still hot will cause the glass tube to shatter due to the
rapid temperature change.

CAUTION
Unplug all electrical items in the aquarium before placing your hands in the tank. We
recommend that you use a Ground Fault Interrupter (G.F.I) for all electrical accessories.
When removing the filter from the aquarium for maintenance, always unplug the heater (if
one is installed) at least 20 minutes before to allow the heater core to cool. A hot heater
core will crack the glass tube as a result of a rapid temperature change when exposed to
air.

UNIT MAINTENANCE

BioLife has only one moving part located in the pump, so maintenance is minimal. Take the pump out of its chamber and
clean accumulated deposits in the impeller well once a month. Hagen's Fluval Cleaning Brush for Impellers (A-680, sold
separately) is recommended for this purpose.
The entire unit can be rinsed with lukewarm water to remove any buildup, but care should be taken to avoid harming the
biological "dry" chamber. The BioMAX Ceramic Rings should only be rinsed in aquarium water, not tap water, which could
contain chlorine or chloramine that are toxic to friendly bacteria colonies.
Separate the BioMAX rings before rinsing the rest of the unit. Regular use of Cycle will reduce any buildup of waste par-
ticles and deposits by actively breaking down sludge, reducing filter maintenance. NEVER use soap or detergents to clean the
unit because even the slightest residual trace could harm aquarium inhabitants.
MEDIA MAINTENANCE
Complete and detailed instructions about how to use filter media are found on individual media packaging. The table below
