Evaluation Unit KXA-5-...
Sensor KXS-...
The principle of operation for the KXS-/KXA-Series of sensors is based on the three-electrode-principle.
With this measuring principle a counter-electrode is essential, this is normally provided by the machine
potential or the potential of the plant or by the protective wire PE. For most of the measurements it is
irrelevant where the counter-electrode is in relation to the proximity sensor. The counter-electrode can
be a far greater distance relative to the real measuring distance.
Advantages of the three-electrode-measurement are:
- Independent of temperature
- Extremely large sensing distance
The permitted ambient temperature range for the KXS-... sensor is -200...+250°C and for the KXA-...
amplifier -25...+70°C. The maximum achievable sensing distances can be more then 100 mm, dependent
on the diameter of the sensor and the dielectric constant e r of the object to be detected. The sensitivity
of the measurement is determined with the adjustment
Mounting:
The evaluation units KXA-5-... are available in 2 versions
• A one-point evaluation unit KXA-5-1-...(see dimension no. No. 1 Page 11)
• A three-point evaluation unit KXA-5-3-M... for 3 switching points (see dimension Nr. 2,
Page 34)
• A multiple evaluation unit KXA-5-3-M... / KXA-5-3-S... as Master/Slave System (1 x M
(Master) + n x S (Slave) with 3 switching points each Master or Slave (see dimension no.
3, Page 34)
For each of these 2 versions there are two different variants:
• The „MINI" version for combination with M5, M8 and M12 sensors
• the version with no addition to the part number for combination with M18, M30, M32 sensors
The recommended evaluation unit should always be used, in order to exploit the optimal adjustment
range, that means from sensing distance zero to maximum. Using the wrong evaluation unit will limit
the adjustable range.
Please note: If the sensor is not mounted in metal a galvanic connection has to be made from the
electronics to the potential of the protective wire. Alternative this signal can be connected to the
soldering tag on the amplifier. With multiple measurements it is sufficient to make this connection 1 x each
Machine/Plant. Only when the machine parts are electrically isolated must each machine part be connected
separately. Connect the sensors to the evaluation unit. The connection of the supply voltage has to be
made according to the diagram on the unit.
Please note: Wiring should be routed separately or screened from large value conducting cables, as
in extreme cases inductive peak voltages can destroy the sensors despite the integrated protective
circuit. Screened cables or twisted lines are especially recommended with long cable runs > 5 m.
Please take note that the use of a DC/DC-transducer calls for a higher current than the operating current
briefly when switching on the equipment. Therefore the power pack must have enough low-
impedance!
