5 Setup

5.1 Safety information

WARNING!
The mattresses are recommended to be installed on
medical bed frames with bed sides or assist rails. It
is preferred that the rails be in the raised position
whenever the patient is on the bed.
– Operate all bed frame motorized functions through
their full range of motion to be certain that there is
no pulling, interference or pinching.
WARNING!
Risk Of Injury Or Death
To avoid entrapment and/or falling:
– Health care professionals assigned to each case should
make the final determination whether side or assist
rails are warranted after assessing patient risks of
entrapment and falls in accordance with State patient
restraint legislation or facility interpretation of such
legislation.
WARNING!
– Do not modify this equipment without authorization
of the manufacturer.
– If this equipment is modified, appropriate inspection
and testing must be conducted to ensure continued
safe use of the equipment.

Risk of entrapment
Patient entrapment with the bed side rails may
cause injury or death. Proper patient assessment
and monitoring, and proper maintenance and use of
equipment is required to reduce the risk of entrapment.
Variations in bed rail dimensions, mattress thickness, size
and density could increase the risk of entrapment.
– Visit the FDA website at http://www.fda.gov to learn
about the risks of entrapment. Review "A Guide to
Bed Safety", published by the Hospital Bed Safety
Workgroup, located at www.invacare.com. Use the link
located under each bed rail product entry to access
this bed safety guide.
– Refer to the Bed Rail Entrapment Risk Notification
Guide included with your mattress for further
information.

Risk of Injury Or Death
Patient entrapment from the use of bed side rails may
cause injury or death. To avoid patient entrapment:
– Mattress must fit firmly against the bed frame and
bed side rails to prevent patient entrapment. Follow
the manufacturer's instructions. Monitor patient
frequently. Read and understand the User Manual
prior to using the mattress and rails. User manuals are
available from Invacare or your dealer.
– After any adjustments, repair or service and before
use, make sure all attaching hardware is tightened
securely.
