Refraction of an infrared beam. Acoustical detection.
In relation to the previous experiment, simply replace the plane mirror with a prism or a half
cylinder in Plexiglas or glass. The prism's apex angle must be 30 or 45° to prevent the
occurrence of total reflection of the beam too easily. Rotate the prism with small movements
around a vertical axis until an audible signal is heard (figure 9). Although it may not be
possible to carry out accurate measurements of angles, we can however show that the
refraction with angular incidence corresponds to a deviation of the beam during a change
in medium.
