Validity
This additional installation, operation and maintenance
manual is valid for ABB open drip proof machines
(M2FA) and is to be read together with the general
manual (ABB/Low Voltage Motors/Manual). Additional
information may be required for some machines due to
special application and/or design considerations.
Installation
The cooling air intake for the motor is normally at the
drive end of the machine and the hot air outlet is at the
non-drive end. Ensure free flow of cooling air and control
the correct air flow direction.
Direct the hot exhaust air away from coolant intake. Also
direct the hot cooling air of other potential heat sources
away.
The ventilator is designed only to cool the motor itself,
not the driven machine.
WARNING
The cooling air temperature at outlet is high.
Do not install cables or other material sensitive
to heat in the exhaust air flow.
WARNING
The cooling air carries oil and grease droplets
that are dripping from the bearings. Do not
install any oil-sensitive materials, e.g. rubber, in
the coolant flow.
WARNING
A fault in the machine windings could cause
an arc and spread molten metal droplets out of
the machine. Do not install anything flammable
near the machine. Do not remain unnecessarily
close to the machine while it is running.
Use

Operating conditions

Machine series M2FA is designed for use in dry, clean
indoor environments. Installation in locked compressor
or electrical rooms is recommended.
WARNING
The velocity of the cooling air is high. Protect
the eyes when standing near machines whilst
running.
Drip proof machine M2FA is made to class IP 23 S.
Objects having diameter in excess of 12 mm do not
penetrate the openings of the machine. IEC test finger
does not reach moving or energized parts inside the
machine. Rain falling at an angle of less than 60 degrees
from vertical will not cause harmful effects when the
machine is standing still.
WARNING
Objects having a diameter of 12 mm or less may
penetrate into the machine and cause damage.
2 – EN
M2FA machines are not protected against water whilst
running. Control the mounting designation.
The machines have no air intake filter. The machines
must not be installed outdoors. The machines are not
protected against ingress of snow, leaves, metal chips, oil
mist, etc.
The machines must not be used in the presence of dust
of organic origin or other kinds of flammable dust
because such an environment is hazardous.
WARNING
The machine has a high noise level. Wear ear
protection!
Allowed starting time for M2FA motors is half of the
starting time for TEFC-types

Electric supply

M2FA motor series is not designed to be used with
non-sinusoidal supply.
Effective limiting of fault currents with fuses and/or current
limiting circuit-breaker (MCCB-type) is recommended.

Lubrication

If the machine is fitted with a lubrication information plate,
follow the values given, otherwise use the values
as follows. The table is prepared for horizontally mounted
machines. The values are based on an 80°C bearing
temperature.
