d) Choosing the operating mode
The metal detector has three modes, which are selected using the MODE dial (16).
• To enable VLF mode, turn the MODE dial (16) clockwise by one position to switch on the metal detector
- VLF mode checks the battery status and metal detector settings. (See "Checking the battery status", "Default
setting - TUNE" and "Configuring the ground conditions - GROUND" for details.)
• Turn the MODE dial (16) clockwise to the next position to enable "TR1" mode. This mode distinguishes between
ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
• Turn the MODE dial (16) clockwise to the next position to enable "TR2" mode. This mode distinguishes between
different types of non-ferrous metals (e.g. aluminium and gold).
The battery test switch (14) must be in the "OPERATE" position to ensure that the mode is enabled.
e) Default setting - TUNE
This setting needs to be configured to ensure that the metal detector gives consistent results and to prevent
interference or false signals. The metal detector should be retuned each time it is switched on.
• Keep the detection probe (1) away from metal objects and other overground sources of interference (e.g. fluorescent
tubes). Keep the search probe (1) at least 30 cm above the ground and hold it in an open space.
• Turn the MODE dial (16) clockwise to switch on the metal detector.
• Move the battery test switch (14) to "OPERATE".
• Turn the VOLUME dial (13) clockwise (by approximately one third).
• Turn the MODE dial (16) to enable VLF mode.
• Turn the GROUND (7), DISCRIMINATION (15) and SENSITIVITY (8) dial to the neutral position.
• Press and hold the push button (9) on the handle with your finger and slowly turn the TUNE dial (9) clockwise until
the pointer on the analogue display (21) points to zero. If necessary, move the dial backwards and forwards slightly
until you find the correct position.
• If the metal detector beeped when you were tuning the pointer, it will stop beeping when the pointer is in the zero
position. Other settings need to be configured when the metal detector is in use; see the following sections for
details.
• Press the push button (9) to reset the pointer to the zero position if it moves out of position in "TR1" or "TR2" mode.
The default setting must be reconfigured before each use, when moving to a different search area and
when the ambient conditions change.
f) Configuring the ground conditions - GROUND
Different surfaces have different characteristics depending on the minerals present, the location and other factors
(e.g. salt water content). Ferrous surfaces generate a signal in the metal detector that may be stronger than a
signal generated by a metal object. This phenomenon tends to occur in surfaces containing large amounts of salt
water. These surfaces usually have a constant phase shift that can be blocked out when the ground conditions are
configured correctly. It is possible to distinguish a metal signal from the background signal. To block undesired signals
and interference due to ground conditions, follow the steps below to change the ground condition settings on the
metal detector:
