Assembly, dismantling and installation of the airbrakes.
Some model airbrake systems tend to be problematic, particularly the longer units as they
tend to stick, either when opening or closing at higher air speeds. The units supplied in this
kit incorporate a centre latch and an over-centre locking mechanism system which totally
alleviates this problem. The airbrake is also designed to be entirely dismantled, even once
installed, but some care is required when handling the mechanism. Please follow the
instructions for assembly and disassembly.
Note: When the airbrake fully assembled and closed it is possible that you may
find it difficult to open as the mechanism is locked. Do not apply any force as
doing so will invariably result in damage. To open the airbrake, hold the
assembly as you would a pencil and tap one end sharply on a solid surface to
release the brake. Then carefully lift the blades out of the brake box.
Dismantling:
The entire airbrake mechanism can be dismantled. This can be useful when installing the
brake box for the first time or when replacing worn or damaged parts:
With the airbrake extended, carefully lift the top blade upwards to remove. The lower blade
is easily removed by pressing on each retaining point with a fingernail. The leavers can
also be disengaged from their shafts by gripping them firmly with a small pair of pliers and
carefully twisting sideways. Note that the actuating lever on the left-hand airbrake may
only be removed if the plastic lever is first laid horizontal after it has been disengaged from
its shaft.
Assembly:
Left-hand airbrake: the actuating mechanism may only be inserted into the guide block
when the plastic lever is held horizontal. Position the opening in the plastic lever over the
shaft and press it down firmly onto the shaft with the aid of a screwdriver.
Right-hand airbrake: The lever can be in any position. Insert into the guide block and
proceed as above. Hold the levers erect and press the lower blade carefully onto the
