4 Setting-up and Connection

Prior to the connection or changing existing connec-
tions, switch off the active system and the units to be
connected.
1) Place the PSUB-18L on the floor as desired. It is
possible to place a speaker system as a top part at
a certain distance above the active system. For this
purpose, insert an adapter for speaker stands (e. g.
from the PAST series*) into the stand sleeve on the
upper side of the active system and place the
speaker system on top.
2) Connect the signal source (e. g. preamplifier, mixer)
to the XLR jack INPUT (1).
3) At the XLR jack OUTPUT (7) the input signal fed
through is available. This jack allows to connect
e. g. the amplifier for the main speakers.
4) Finally connect the supplied mains cable to the
mains jack (10) and to a socket (230 V~/50 Hz).
5 Operation
All adjustments and sound evaluations can only be
made in connection with the main speakers. The
sound should be evaluated at the final place of hearing
where a second person at the subwoofer should be
instructed to perform an optimum adjustment.
CAUTION Never adjust a very high volume. Per-
manent high volumes may damage
your hearing! The human ear will get
accustomed to high volumes which do
not seem to be that high any more after
some time. Therefore, do not further
increase a high volume after getting
used to it.
1) With the control HIGH CUT (6) adjust the upper
crossover frequency of the subwoofer. As a guid-
ance, observe the lower crossover frequency of the
main speakers.
2) Switch on the connected signal source.
3) Prior to the first switching on of the subwoofer, turn
the control LEVEL (2) to the left stop (position - ∞ )
so that the adjustment of the volume is not too high
at the beginning. Then switch on the subwoofer with
the mains switch POWER (8). The mains switch
and the power indication ACTIVE (3) light up.
4) Adjust the volume ratio of the subwoofer to the main
speakers with the control LEVEL. Thus, it is possi-
ble to obtain a natural bass reproduction or a bass
reproduction which is deliberately amplified.

If the volume is too high, the indication LIMIT (5)
lights up. This shows that the integrated limiter lim-
its the volume when exceeding the maximum value.
If the indication LIMIT should light up permanently,
turn back the control LEVEL accordingly.
5) When setting up several speaker systems, the
sound waves of the systems may show a different
phase at the place of hearing. This may cause
undesired attenuation of certain frequencies. To
balance this, the PSUB-18L is equipped with a
phase reversal switch. Test both positions of the
button PHASE (4) – pressed (phase reversed) or
not pressed (phase not reversed) – and choose the
position offering the best bass reproduction.
6) After operation, switch off the active system with the
POWER switch.
