PINPOINT
Hold the search head steady for about 1 second and then hold the pinpoint button for no more
than 2 to 3 seconds. You can also get a better fix on the target's location. Release and then
press the pinpoint button over the target to detune the device. It is very important to hold the
search head still while you are doing this. Failure to do so may produce confusing audio
responses.

6. General Hints

Pinpointing
Hold the search head close to but not directly over the suspected centre. Keep the search head
stationary – this is very important – and hold the pinpoint button. Now sweep towards the centre
of the target. Repeat this procedure until the response is a short audio blip. This blip marks the
centre of the target object. Verify the reliability of your target by approaching it from a different
angle. Make a 90° turn and try to identify the same target. Proceed carefully when unearthing
your find so as not to damage it.
1) The strongest signal will always be received when the object is directly beneath the centre
of the head. Keep the search head motionless when you are directly over the target object
to pinpoint the find, then sweep the search head in a 90° arc (45° to the left, 45° to the
right). Change the position of your body by 90° and repeat the 90° sweep, covering the
same ground again and thus forming a cross with the two sweeps.
2) To "pinpoint" the target signal still further, you can raise the search head and/or lower it
when necessary while sweeping over the object until a faint signal is heard.
Detection Range
Your CS8SST is a top quality detector but adverse soil conditions can significantly reduce the
depth of detection.
The detection range varies depending on the size of the object, how long it has been in the
ground and the type of soil it is buried in.
Compact soils are ideal and yield the best results. If the object has been buried for some time it
will have interacted with the salts in the ground, which will make the object appear larger to the
detector.
The worst conditions are found in loose soil or freshly dug earth. Detection is also difficult if the
object has only been buried a short while. The detection range is reduced under these
circumstances.
Ninety percent of all artefacts are found within 6" / 15cm of the surface. Adverse conditions can
reduce the detection range by more than half.
