anticlockwise until the item is rejected. Make sure no other metals are near the search
head when you are setting the discrimination level.
d) The pinpoint button is used to find the exact location of the target and to determine its
depth. When using this function, you should move the search head as close as possible to
the target and then hold the search head perfectly still while you press and hold the
pinpoint button. Sweep the search head in ever shorter swings until the target response is
a mere blip. When this happens, you have found the centre of the target.
Make a mental note of where you found the centre of the object. Hold the device slightly
off to one side, press and hold the button and move towards the centre of the target. Note
the LEDs lighting from left to right. They indicate the depth of the target in inches and can
also be used to verify the position of the target.
e) The NOTCH SELECT (left) and NOTCH WIDTH (right) controls operate in conjunction with
the DISC control to accept or reject targets. The range of the NOTCH SELECT control is
identical to that of the DISC control. Generally speaking, any target accepted or rejected
by the DISC control can also be accepted or rejected with the notch control e.g. a target
discovered in the 1 o'clock position with the DISC control will also be detected by the
NOTCH SELECT control when placed in the same 1 o'clock position. Adjust the width of
the notch band with the NOTCH WIDTH control.
f) The SST Scan provides a visual indication that the ground scanning function is active (the
ground scanning function is always active, whether the SST Scan is activated or not).
Activate this function as follows : hold the pinpoint button for max. 2 to 3 seconds when
turning on the device. The detector will not function properly if you hold the button any
longer. The bar graph LEDs will now light consecutively in a rapid scanning movement.
Turn the detector off to reset the microprocessor if the device does not function normally.
Start by turning the DISC control, the NOTCH SELECT control and the NOTCH WIDTH control
to the far left. This way, the notch function is turned off. In order to use the NOTCH SELECT
control, the DISC control should be at a lower setting than the NOTCH SELECT control (start
with the DISC control at 9 o'clock).
An example would be to set the device to reject iron and ring pulls but still pick up nickel and
coins :
Start by turning the DISC control clockwise while moving the search head over an iron object
such as a screwdriver or your trowel. Increase the sensitivity of the DISC control until the device
no longer reacts to iron. Place the NOTCH WIDTH control in the 12 o'clock position next. Move
the search head over a ring pull and turn the NOTCH SELECT control clockwise until the unit
no longer responds. The search head should now respond as it passes over a coin. The LEDs
should also indicate that the target is valid : the LEDs from A to G on the lower scale should
light.
Adjust the length of the stem in such a way that the search head skims the ground when you
extend your arm. Walk slowly forward and sweep from side to side. The slower you proceed,
the smaller the chance that you will miss anything. Keep the search head as close to the ground
as possible without actually touching the ground. Try to maintain a fixed height for the search
head. This is particularly important at the end of each swing as most people have a tendency to
raise the search head before they start sweeping in the other direction.
The CS8SST will indicate a target through an audible identifying tone and by lighting a LED.
Sometimes it helps to read a target from more than one direction. Turn 90° over the suspected
target and sweep again. Sometimes this second reading will differ from the first, indicating that
the first reading may be false. This is a very useful technique since most valid targets produce
the same signal from all sides. Only invalid targets tend to generate different signals.
