2. Assembly
Attach the lower stem to the upper stem by tightening the lock nut. Wrap the cable around the
upper and lower stem while leaving enough slack so that the search head can move freely
without overtightening the cable. Insert the cable in the slots immediately above the search
head to hold the cable in the desired position.
3. Batteries
The CS8SST is powered by eight AA-batteries. It is advisable to use standard alkaline batteries
to start with. You can switch to rechargeables as your use of the CS8SST intensifies.
Put the power switch in the OFF position. Loosen the two captive screws in the battery cover
and lift the cover off. Take out the battery holder and disconnect the battery snaps. Fit eight
batteries into the holder while observing the polarity indications. Reconnect the battery snaps
with care and put the loader back into the battery compartment. Replace the cover and tighten
the two captive screws.
Note : Remove the batteries at the end of the day if you are using zinc-carbon batteries
because they might leak if you were to leave them in.
Battery Check
The condition of the batteries is always checked when the device is activated. The battery
check lasts 3 or 4 seconds and then normal operation is resumed. New or fully charged
batteries should cause the LED on the far right to illuminate. Replace or recharge the batteries if
no LEDs are lit. Only one LED will be lit at any given time.
The LED bar graph gives an accurate indication of the condition of the batteries. As the
batteries drain, the LEDs will light one by one and from right to left. A NiCd pack will give you a
typical autonomy of anywhere between 5 to 10 hours. Generally, you are about halfway through
the life of a battery pack when the battery check reads 5 or 6. The drain rate depends on a
number of factors e.g. you can maximise battery life by using headphones or deactivating the
SST Scan feature.
The CS8SST has a built-in battery monitoring system that functions continuously during normal
operation. There is no indication as long as the batteries have sufficient voltage to operate the
device. The LED bar graph will go blank, however, when the voltage drops low enough to cause
erratic or unpredictable operation. There will be no target identification (see "4 a" below) or SST
Scan (see "4 f" below) when this happens. The audio will function but may not be reliable. When
the LEDs go blank the operator should recharge or replace the batteries.
4. Features
a) The LED bar graph provides target identification, indicates depth (in inches) and tells you
that the ground scanning function is activated.
b) The power/sensitivity control turns the unit on and sets the level of sensitivity. Adjust the
sensitivity as follows : slowly turn the knob clockwise until the LEDs begin to come on as
though something were detected. Then you slowly turn the knob anticlockwise until the
LEDs go out again.
c) The DISC (discrimination) control eliminates target objects in the following order : iron,
silver paper or aluminium foil, a new 10p coin, an old 10p coin, bottle caps, a £1 coin.
Sweep a sample of the item you want the device to ignore and adjust the control
