3. Disconnect "Y" adapter (Figure 1) from breathing circuit and
do not use. Attach inspiratory and expiratory limbs to INCA
Stay-Flex tubing. Remove Pressure "T" Adapter Insert (Figure 3) and
connect pressure monitor line to INCA "T" adapter. If the ventilator
system does not have a separate pressure monitoring line, remove
"T" adapter and replace with extra white adapter included in tray.
4. Place knit cap over neonate's occipital area to ensure stability
(cap can be cuffed for size.) Leave band open (Figure 4).

5. Begin the prescribed gas flow. Fit nasal cannula in neonate's nares.
Hold prongs in place until neonate becomes stable and continuous
flow begins through the circuit. This may take a minute or two
(Figure 5).
Figure 5
The cannulae prongs should fit the nares snugly without
pinching the septum. If the prongs do not fit snugly, the excess
movement may cause damage to the mucosa and possible
septal erosion.
The nasal prongs should fill the nasal opening completely
without stretching the skin or putting undue pressure on the
nares (blanching around the rim of the nostrils suggests that
the prongs are too large).
Do not allow the bridge of the cannula to press up against the
septum. There should be a small space between the tip of the
septum and the bridge between the prongs.
Note: Applying a skin barrier material where the nasal cannula
makes contact with the skin may minimize tissue damage.
(Ref. NEO-prep skin barrier, small P/N 44-8000 or large, P/N 44-8001).
6. Make initial bends in Stay-Flex tubing to conform to neonate's head
size and position (i.e., prone, supine).
7. Place both left and right lengths of Stay-Flex tubing snugly into slit of
foam block (Figure 6).
Figure 6
8. Position foam blocks between knit cap and cotton band, and secure
by wrapping the band around the head and securing it with the
hook/loop tab. This will hold tubing securely and comfortably in place.
The foam also provides a cushion between the tubing and the
neonate's head (Figure 7).

9. Make final adjustments in Stay-Flex tubing to fine-tune prong position.
10. Alter the neonate's positioning from the supine to the prone or
11. Use an oral gastric tube to eliminate gastric insufflation if required.
12. To help optimize the effect of CPAP, a chin strap may help prevent
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE –
INCA REPLACEMENT SECTIONS
To remove the used tubing and cannula:
1. Gently remove the cannula from the nares.
2. Lift the tubing out of the head band assembly, leave foam blocks.
3. Disconnect the used tubing from the circuit at the white adapter
4. Install replacement tubing and cannula per previous instructions.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE – INCA ACCESSORY PACK
The Accessory Pack provides clinicians with extra hats when cannula and
hat sizes do not match neonate. The pack also includes extra chin straps,
hook-and-loop fasteners and foam blocks.
See "INCA Complete Set" above for instructions for use.
