Operating instructions

Controls (Fig. 2)
The Jøtul F 8 TD is equipped with the following controls:
Ignition vent control.
(Fig. 2-A)
Air vent control.
(Fig. 2-B)

Initial lighting

Before lighting the stove, put a layer of sand in the bottom
to protect the bottom plate. The sand should cover the top
of the ridges. (See fig. 7D)
• Open all air vents.
• Make a small fire to start with. Increase the size
gradually and keep the fire going for a couple of hours.
Notice!
Painted products: When lighting a fire for the first time, it is
normal for a new painted stove to emit an irritating gas,
which may smell and even give off smoke. The gas is not
poisonous, but open a window or a door near the stove to
provide additional ventilation.

Tips for making a fire for everyday use

Place two medium-sized pieces of wood on each side of
the combustion chamber. Screw up some newspaper and
place between the wood. Then place some kindling wood
in a criss-cross pattern over it. Light the fire and continue
to add a further amount of split dry wood until a healthy
bed of glowing coals has formed. You can now add 3 - 4
small to medium pieces of wood. Allow this fire to burn for
a short while.
Close the ignition vent (fig. 2A) when you are sure that the
wood is burning well. Adjust the primary air control (fig.
2B) to set your desired heat output level and to maintain
safe operating temperatures.
Always use good quality firewood. It gives the best results
and does not damage the product.
NB! Never use gasoline or similar liquids to start or "freshen
up" a fire.
Never use the following on the fire:
-
household waste
-
painted or impregnated timber - which is very toxic.
-
laminated wooden planks
-
drift wood
-
plastic or any other type of waste product.
These may harm the product and are also pollutants!
Note! Danger of overheating: The stove must never be used
in a manner that causes overheating.
Overheating is defined as overfilling the stove with
firewood and/or leaving the draught vent fully open.
8
The chimney draught should never exceed 2,5 mm H
Pa) when the stove is in use.
A sure sign of overheating is when parts of the stove glows
red. When this happens, reduce the draught vent opening
immediately.

Maintenance

Cleaning the glass

From time to time it is necessary to clean off the
accumulated ash from the inside surface of the glass. The
amount of soot which may deposit on the glass might
depend upon the local amount of draught present or the
regulation of the top air control.
Some good advice! For general cleaning, use some kitchen
roll - soak it with hot water, and dip it into some ashes. Rub
the glass with the paper, and you will see that most of the
soot will disappear. Rinse the glass with clean water and
dry completely before burning the stove. If it is necessary
to clean the glass more thoroughly, we re-commend a
"Glass cleaner".

Ash removal

Lift out the ash retainer. Use a shovel or similar tool to
remove the ash. Leave a little ash in the bottom of the
combustion chamber as a protective insulating layer. Also
see the description of how to handle ashes under: General
safety precautions.
Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight
fitting lid.
By the way - ashes are an excellent fertilizer.

Cleaning and soot removal

During use of the stove, soot may deposit on the side walls.
Soot insulates a lot and will reduce the heat output of the
stove. To avoid a build up of creosote or condenced water,
it is important on a regular basis to increase the heating to
dry out the deposit.
At least once a year, perform a routine maintenance check.
A good time to do this is when you are cleaning the chimney
and connector.

Cleaning the flue pipe

If the stove is connected at the rear, remove the top-plate
and it is easy to clean the flue.
The easiest way to clean the flue if the stove is connected
at the top, is to lay down the baffle plate and clean through
