1. Put the splint on an even surface near the patient.
2. Mould the splint so that it is even or, if necessary, in an appropriate state for the emergency.
3. Close the valve by turning it to the right (clockwise).
4. Place the leg/lower leg/arm/forearm/wrist in the medically desired position on the splint.
5. Mould the splint around the leg/arm so that the fracture becomes stable and the unit is comfortable for the patient.
6. Attach the Velcro fasteners and tighten them.
7. Lift the foot part of the splint to a supporting angle of the foot and fasten the strap crosswise to the leg.
8. Connect the pump. Evacuate the air, and continue to mould the splint. Tighten the Velcro fastenings once more.
9. The patient is ready to be transported.
For patients with short legs the foot part should be folded.
By using the extension straps it is possible to support fractures in hip or shoulder.
In special cases, the Full Leg Splint can be used as a vacuum mattress for a small child. For this you need the optional
head strap.
In special cases, the Leg Splint can be used as a vacuum mattress for a baby. For this, you need the optional head
strap.

6. Cleaning and disinfecting

After each use the Vacuum Splint should be wiped with a moist cloth and dried. If dirty the splint may be washed with
soapy water and rinsed with clean water.
Allow the Vacuum Splint to dry completely before storing it.
If the Vacuum Splint needs disinfection first clean it carefully and let it dry. Wipe the complete splint with a solution
containing 70% alcohol or use the disinfectant called LYSETOL AF.
Test the Vacuum Splint at regular intervals to make sure that it has the necessary tightness.
If leaks are found; see section 7 for repair instructions.

7. Maintenance and repair

At a regular basis the Vacuum Splint and the pump must be checked for visible damages.
At the same time the splint must be tested as to tightness. Furthermore the suction force of the vacuum pump must be
checked according to Section 8.
Leaks can be found on the Vacuum Splint by visual inspection or by filling the splint with air covering it with soapy water
all over the surface and the welds and watching out for air bubbles from the splint.
If leaks have been found on the splint, mark the leak, let any air out, clean the area around the leakage and let it dry.
Find a patch in a suitable size and put glue on the patch as well as on the leakage on the splint. Wait for the glue to
become dust dry (approx. 2 minutes) and place the patch on the leakage. Firmly press the whole area of the patch
establishing good contact and press out all air under the patch.
The repair will have full strength after 24 hours.
