Fabrication of duplicate casts

4.1 Preparation

Our motto is: "Clean tools – clean results!"
Practical hint: Use only clean mixing bowls that have been slightly moistened.
Residual investment compound and scratches on the walls of the mixing bowl can trap
large amounts of mixing liquid, adversely affecting not only the working time but also the fit.
4.2 Mixing the investment powder
Mixing ratio (powder : liquid) = 100 g : 15 ml
Rapidly mix powder and liquid manually in a clean Multivac (evacuation unit) mixing bowl using a
spatula until no more dry powder is present in the bowl (no more than 30 seconds). Alternatively,
use the Multivac compact mixing unit for pre-mixing. Close the mixing bowl. Place the bowl in an
evacuation unit until the maximum vacuum is reached. Then stir the investment compound under
vacuum for 60 s.
For large-span bridges (6 or more units) or complicated constructions, the mixing time in vacuum
can be shortened to 30 seconds if required.
CAUTION! If you use the Multivac compact for mixing, use Program #1, as for Deguvest SR, or
the standard program. Do not use the Optivest program.

4.3 Pouring silicone duplicating moulds

Depending on the cast, 100 –150 g powder are needed (100 g : 15 ml or 150 g : 22.5 ml). It is
easier to pour silicone duplicating casts if a wetting agent is first applied. Caution: The moulds
must be blow-dried completely before pouring. Silicone duplicates should not be poured
immediately after duplicating the cast. Removing the cast creates a deformation that takes
some time to disappear. Allow the duplicate to stand for at least 15 minutes before pouring the
Optivest SR.
Pour mixed investment compound into the muffle using slight vibration. Make sure to void trapping
air. After the duplicating mould has been filled, turn off the vibrator immediately. Allow to harden for
30 minutes. Carefully remove the cast from the duplicating mould.

4.4 Pouring agar-agar duplicating moulds

Water the cast in hand-warm water for approximately 10 minutes before applying the duplicating
gel. After watering, blot the liquid carefully off the cast or blow-dry the cast. For gel duplication,
follow the gel manufacturer's instructions.
Pour mixed investment compound into the muffle using slight vibration. Make sure to void trapping
air. After the duplicating mould has been filled, turn off the vibrator immediately. Allow to harden for
30 minutes. Carefully remove the cast from the duplicating mould!
