For your safety
It is absolutely mandatory that you read and understand these
instructions before you use the particulate respirator and that you
only use them for the intended use described below. Failure to do so
could lead to sickness or death. If you have any questions
concerning these instructions or how to properly use the particulate
respirator, ask your supervisor or call Dräger in the USA at 1-800-
437-2437. In other countries, please contact the respective Dräger
subsidiary or your local dealer.
WARNING
!
You must read and understand these instructions for use
before you use the particulate respirator; and you must
strictly follow these instructions.
Failure to do so could lead to sickness or death.
Supervisors have to ensure that in their field of responsibility all
users are familiar with these instructions for use and will use the
particulate respirators in strict accordance with these instructions
for use.
Description
®
The Dräger X-plore
1700 series comprises the following types of
1)
particulate respirators
:
Dräger X-plore 1750, protection class N95
Dräger X-plore 1760, protection class R95
If the designation contains "V", the particulate respirator features
an exhalation valve which facilitates exhalation during use.
If the designation contains "Odor", the particulate respirator has an
additional activated-carbon filter to provide relief from nuisance le-
vel odors of organic vapors. Nuisance level means that the conta-
minant concentration is below the respective permissible exposure
limit (PEL). Do NOT use these particulate respirators if the nuisan-
ce level exceeds the PEL.
Intended use
The particulate respirators are designed to reduce the percentage
of certain solid and liquid airborne particles that a user will inhale
when working in certain environments. The particulate respirators
do NOT eliminate the risk of inhaling airborne particles.
Dräger X-plore 1750 particulate respirators may be used for
airborne solid particles such as from grinding, sanding, sweeping,
sawing or processing minerals; and for liquid particles or
particulate aerosols that do not contain oil.
Dräger X-plore 1760 particulate respirators may be used for the
same purposes as the Dräger X-plore 1750 and, in addition, they
are resistant to oil.
Dräger X-plore 1750 are NIOSH-rated for 95% filtration efficiency
against solid and liquid aerosols that do not contain oil ("N95").
Dräger X-plore 1760 are NIOSH-rated for 95% filtration efficiency
against solid and liquid aerosols that do contain oil ("R95").
The particulate respirators' performance characteristics - e.g. the
types and percentages of the particles that they filter - fulfill the
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health ("NIOSH")
standards set forth at 42 CFR, Part 84. For more information see
Approval Label.
WARNING
Only use the particulate respirators for the purposes
mentioned above.
Misuse could lead to sickness or death!
Limitations on use
WARNING
!
Strictly obey the following limitations on use.
Failure to do so could lead to sickness or death!
Never use an individual particulate respirator for more than
one single 8-hour work shift.
Never use the particulate respirators in atmospheres
dangerous to life or health.
Never use the particulate respirators in atmospheres
containing less than 19.5% oxygen, since these particulate
respirators do not supply oxygen.
Do not enter unventilated areas such as containers, shafts or
ducts when wearing one of the mentioned particulate
respirators.
Never use the particulate respirators as protection against
chemical, biological, radioactive, or nuclear (CBRN) warfare
hazards.
Never use a respirator that is, or appears to be, damaged,
used, or expired.
Never use the particulate respirators for protection against
inhaling
paint spray
gases
vapors
asbestos particles
silica particles
sandblasting particles
lead
arsenic
4,4' methylene dianiline (MDA)
cadmium
other contaminants that are unknown, carcinogenic, or
immediately dangerous to life or health.
Never use the particulate respirators as protection against ra-
dioactive particles and radiation. The particulate respirators
only reduce the percentage of radioactive particles in the inha-
led air.
Never use Dräger X-plore 1750 particulate respirators in
atmospheres containing oil aerosols.
Never use the particulate respirators in atmospheres with
contaminant concentrations that exceed 10 times the
Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL), specific OSHA standards,
or other applicable regulations, whichever is lower. For PELs
please refer to OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.1000.
General warnings and cautions
WARNING
!
Strictly adhere to the following warnings and cautions.
Failure to do so could lead to sickness or death!
A properly selected particulate respirator is essential to protect
your health. Before using this particulate respirator, consult an
Industrial Hygienist or Occupational Safety Professional to
determine the suitability for your intended use.
Particulate respirators that are properly selected and fitted will
only reduce the contaminant concentration.
This product contains latex. It is located inside the head straps
of the respirator. If used properly, the latex in the respirator will
not come into contact with user's skin. If you are allergic to
latex, you must consult your physician before using this
product.
Do not modify or abuse the particulate respirators.
Do not use the particulate respirators as surgical masks.
Persons with breathing difficulties, such as asthma or with a
history of heart disease, should consult a physician and
complete a medical evaluation prior to use.

Leave the work area if dizziness or other signs of distress
occur.
Do not use with beard or facial hair or other conditions that
prevent a good seal between the face and the sealing surface
of the respirator.
Do not share particulate respirators with other people for
hygienic reasons.
The respirators are not designed to be used by children.
These particulate respirators are not intended for use as
protection against bacterial or viral agents such as avian (bird)
flu virus, SARS or any other bacterial, viral or biological agents.
Respirators must be used in accordance with a complete
respiratory protection program including selection, training, fit-
testing, and fit-checking. US Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) provides detailed information on such
respiratory protection programs.
Never remove your respirator when you are in contaminated
areas! The outer surface of the respirator must be treated as if
it is contaminated at all times. Wash hands immediately after
removing the respirator.
Mandatory pre-use precautions
WARNING
!
The following pre-use precautions have to be taken.
Failure to do so could lead to sickness or death!
Before using a respirator, you must:
fully understand the environment in which you intend to
use it. For example, you must take measurements with
appropriate measuring devices to determine type and
concentration of the airborne particles, gases, or vapors
you will encounter. You must then choose a respirator that
is appropriate for that environment taking the respective
PELs into account.

measurements
to
ensure
atmosphere contains at least 19.5 vol. % oxygen (see
"Limitations on use").
make sure to use only respirators that have been stored in
their original boxes. The expiry date must not have been
reached (see label on packaging).
check the respirator for scratches, tears or other signs of
damage, and discard the respirator if any damage is found.
make sure a fit test according to OSHA regulation
1910.134 has taken place.

Duration of use
The number of hours that the particulate respirators may be used
depends on several factors, including the concentration of
contaminants in the air, and the amount of work that the user is
performing. The respirator must be replaced as soon as the user
notices that there is noticeably increased breathing resistance - in
other words, when you can no longer inhale easily and comfortably.
Under no circumstances may the respirator be used for more than
8 hours.
WARNING
!
Never use an individual respirator for more than one sing-
le 8-hour work shift.
Never use a respirator that is, or appears to be, damaged,
used, or expired.
Replace the respirator as soon as you notice any difficulty
in inhaling.
Failure to follow this warning could lead to sickness or de-
ath!
Preparation for use
Decide which respirator best suits your purpose.
Use and donning
1. Remove the particulate respirator from its packaging.
2. Prior to use, make sure that there are no holes in the breathing
zone.
3. Hold the particulate respirator in your hand, allowing the head
straps to hang below your hand (see figure A).
4. Position the particulate respirator under your chin and over
your nose (see figure B). Stretch lower strap over your head to
the neck. Position upper strap high on the back of your head.
5. Using both hands, adjust the nose clip to the shape of your
nose (see figure C). Using only one hand could result in
improper fit.
6. Cup both hands over the particulate respirator and exhale
vigorously (see figure D).
If air escapes at the sides of the particulate respirator, adjust
the particulate respirator until it fits properly. Make sure that the
nose clip fits the shape of your nose.
WARNING
!
If you cannot achieve satisfactory fit, do NOT enter the
contaminated area. See your supervisor.
Failure to do so could lead to sickness or death!
Maintenance
Inspect particulate respirators for scratches or other damage. Any
particulate respirator which shows signs of damage must be
discarded.
