ENGINE OPERATION

NOTE: For all engines - Refer to engine manufacturer's operating manual. Make sure that the engine has oil and gas
before starting.
KOHLER Engines - See your Kohler engine manual for recommendations on oil, starting and maintenance.
ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATIONS (Kohler SH265)
See your Kohler engine manual for recommendations on oil, starting and maintenance.
For temperatures above 32 degrees Fahrenheit use 10W-30 oil. When operating in temperatures below 32 degrees
Fahrenheit use SAE 5W-20 or SAE 5W-30 oil. Using SAE 30W oil below 40 degrees Fahrenheit will result in hard
starting and possible engine bore damage. Using muti-grade oil may increase oil consumption. Oil capacity is about
0.63 qt. (0.60 L).
STARTING INSTRUCTIONS (Kohler SH265)
Move the fuel lever to the "ON" position.
For a cold engine put the throttle control midway between "SLOW" and 'FAST". Place the choke control into the
"ON" position.
Turn engine ON/OFF switch to "ON". Slowly pull the starter handle to just past compression. STOP! Return
starter handle. Pull firmly with a smooth steady motion until it starts.
Gradually return the choke control to the "OFF" position after the engine starts and warms up.
For a warm engine put the throttle control between "SLOW" and "FAST". A warm engine usually does not require
the choke on.

STOPPING THE ENGINE

If possible, remove the load.
Move the throttle control to the "SLOW" or "LOW" idle position.
Turn the key switch or on/off switch to "OFF" or move throttle to "STOP" position if
equipped.
Close the fuel shut-off valve.
SPLITTER OPERATION
1. Disconnect the log splitter if it is attached to a towing vehicle.
2. Set up the log splitter in a clear, level area and chock the wheels.
3. Check for adequate oil and fuel supply. Add as needed.
4. Start engine and set the throttle to maximum speed.
5. Place a log on the beam against the wedge. DO NOT attempt to cross split logs.
6. With the engine running, push down on the safety latch (1) in front of the control handle with one hand and
push the control handle (2) forward with the other hand. Remove the split log and split the pieces in half if
desired. The log splitter will not operate unless both hands are used to activate the ram.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to continue with the next log.
SPLITTER OPERATION - SHUT DOWN
Make sure the handle is not engaged and shut down the engine using the instruction in the ENGINE OPERATION
SECTION of this manual.
Do not reach across the splitter unit to turn engine on or off.
SPLITTER OPERATION - EMERGENCY SHUT DOWN
Turn the key switch or on/off switch to off.
Do not reach across the splitter unit to turn engine on or off.
WARNING: Do not disable, defeat or
override the safety latch feature.
