from a low height.
Installation
If in doubt about how to install the device correctly, please contact an expert or a specialist
workshop and let them carry out the installation!
Switch off the computer in which the hard disk case is to be installed and all connected
devices. Disconnect all devices from the mains voltage and pull out the mains plug! Just
turning off at the on/off switch is not enough!
• Open your computer's case and carefully remove the cover.
• Look for a free 8.89 cm / 3.5" installation slot and remove the attached front panel.
Often there is a metal shielding behind it, which has to be removed fi rst. With some casings, this can be
unscrewed; with others, you have to carefully break it out.
Depending on the casing, you may have to remove the entire front cover fi rst.
• Connect the internal USB3.0 cable included in the delivery to the corresponding connector on the back of
the card reader.
• Attach a SATA cable to the L-shaped SATA connector. For this, you can use a cable that came with your
mainboard.
• Connect the power supply socket to a suitable connector from your PC power supply.
• Insert the connection cable and the card reader into the mounting slot in your computer's casing.
• Screw the card reader tightly into the mounting slot, so that the front of the card reader lines up with the
front of your computer housing.
• Connect the internal USB3.0 cable terminal to a suitable USB3.0 connector on your mainboard. A catch on
the side of the terminal prevents incorrect/distorted insertion.
If your mainboard has no internal USB3.0 port, then you can upgrade a USB3.0 expansion card, for
example, which has a corresponding terminal.
• Connect the SATA cable to one of the free SATA ports on your mainboard.
It is preferable to use a SATA port that has a hotswap/hotplug facility. Otherwise it will not be pos-
sible to connect to an eSATA device while the computer is running, because the device will not
be recognised. Disconnecting during operation will not be possible without losing data, either.
• Secure all cables so that they cannot slip out of the ports and obstruct one of the fans in the PC case. Use
cable ties, for example, to secure them.
• Close the computer housing.
• Connect your computer and monitor to the mains voltage and switch on all of the devices.
• If your computer does not start correctly, switch it off again immediately and check all the cable connec-
tions.
Before opening the PC again, disconnect the PC from the mains voltage, see above!
Driver installation
www.conrad.com
After starting the operating system (e.g. Windows 7), the system will recognise new hardware. The driver for
the card reader is already integrated in the operating system; follow all your operating system's on-screen
commands.
Version 04/12
Switching the card reader on /off
Use the switch on the front of the card reader to switch it on or off. In the switched-off position, the round
button protudes further outwards than in the switched-on position.
Reading/writing to memory cards
A memory card inserted into the card reader will be integrated in the same way as a conventional removable
media drive.
For instance, with Windows fi le manager you can read the data on the memory card (or store data on the
memory card) in the same way as you use the hard disk or a USB stick.
Removing a Memory Card
When reading/writing to memory cards, wait until the operations are fi nished (until the LED showing
accesses to the memory card no longer fl ashes).
Then, carefully remove the memory card(s) from the card reader.
Tips & Notes
• Ensure that the read-only access (slide switch on the memory card; if available) is in the off position when
deleting from, or writing to, SD/MS memory cards.
• If your mainboard's SATA port that was used for the connection does not support hotswap (also called
hot plugging) (see operating instructions of mainboard), then eSATA devices must not be connected or
disconnected while the computer is on. As described above, this leads to loss of data!
Therefore, we recommend that to avoid doubt, only connect or disconnect eSATA devices when the com-
puter is switched off.
• The LED underneath the On/Off button lights up when a memory card has been inserted and fl ashes dur-
ing read/write accesses. If the LED light is red rather than blue, then there is a faulty USB3.0 connection.
In this case, check whether the USB3.0 cable is properly inserted in the card reader or the mainboard/
expansion card connection.
• The USB3.0 port on the front supplies power of up to 2 A, so that there is no problem when operating
devices with higher energy consumption.
Disposal
The operating system recognises the card reader only when it has been switched on at the
switch on the front side.
Switching the card reader off can speed up the system's start-up process. Furthermore, this
removes, e.g. in Windows XP, the superfl uous drive letters from the fi le manager. The card
reader can also be reset by switching it on and off.
Note: Memory cards can be read or written to only while the card reader is switched on.
In order to use SDXC memory cards with Windows XP, an update of Windows XP is required.
Only then will the "exFat" fi le system of SDXC memory cards be supported.
You can download the update at www.microsoft.com. To fi nd the update, e.g. enter the search
terms "exfat windows xp" in the search bar of your Internet browser.
For Windows Vista, you have to install Service Pack 1 or higher for the system to support SDXC
cards.
If the memory card is removed during a reading/writing access, data on the memory card can be
damaged and a new formatting of the memory card might even be necessary.
This also applies if the card reader is switched off during a reading/writing memory card access.
Dispose of an unserviceable product in accordance with the relevant statutory regulations.
