Chapter 5. Customer Replacement Units

Customer Replacement Units (CRUs) are computer parts that can be upgraded
or replaced by the customer. There are two types of CRUs: internal and
external. External CRUs are easy to install, whereas internal CRUs require
some technical skill and in some cases might require tools such as a
screwdriver. However, both external and internal CRUs are safe for removal by
the customer. Internal CRUs can be removed and installed by customers or by
a Lenovo service technician during the warranty period.
Customers are responsible for replacing all external CRUs.
Desktop computers contain external and internal CRUs. External CRUs are
located outside the computer. Examples of external CRUs include the
keyboard, the mouse, any USB device, and the power cord. Internal CRUs
cannot be removed without first opening the cover of the computer. Examples
of internals CRUs include memory modules, optical drives, adapter cards, and
the power supply.
The User Guide and Hardware Installation and Replacement Guide provide
instructions for replacing External and internal CRUs. Refer to the following
tables Table 1 on page 49 to determine which publication contains the
instructions you need. To view a publication, open the Start menu from the
Windows desktop, select All Programs, select Online Books, and click Online
Books. Double-click on the appropriate publication.

Note: Only use computer parts provided by Lenovo. Refer to Chapter 3,
"Lenovo Limited Warranty," on page 27 for warranty information about the
CRUs for your machine type.
